You do NOT lock the steering when using A frames. All it does is scrub front tyres and put unneeded strain on the mounting points.
I have used A frames for may years for towing cars and trucks all over Australia. When I was in the Army I towed and Land Rover from Darwin to Sydney, when you turn corners the front wheels of the towed vehicle will track like a trailer and then come back to centre when driving in a straight line.
Save your self money and heartache and DO NOT lock the steering.

I thought it would have wandered about a bity without them being locked , oh well , live and learn . I'll rephrase that then , the one I knew used a steering lock .

Thanks Pete, that is the sort of info I was looking for.
I've never towed a car on a proper hitch, but minis/mokes are ideal as they are under the 750kg trailer brake limit here in WA.

do you mean like, by the way the wheels point inwards a bit.. so it would sorta drive strait by itself?

If your wheel alignment is right your front wheels should toe OUT not in.
What the Doc is talking about (castor) is if you let go of the steering wheel when turning, the front wheels will straighten themself up due to the castor angle.

Think of a supermarket trolley, when going forwards the front wheels swivel on their casters. The Mini will do this too on an A bracket.
But when you back a trolley up, the casters spin around 180° so the wheels follow. Mini front wheels will not do this, the hubs have less than 45° travel left and right. So, the wheels cannot follow, they will turn to full lock, and stay there.
Watch it. :wink:
Better to unhook, then push or drive the car back.

Just check the reg's as in NSW you also need a second hook up (safety chain) so if a mounting bolt/pin breaks it will not come completely off the towing vehicle and you can still pull it to the side of the road, just like the chains on on trailer or caravan but must be attached the the towed vehicle.
