I'd keep the 3.6 ratio, he said he doesn't go far and it will be more nippy.

I'd ditch the 266 and get an RE13

Booster is up to your own preference.

Booster - you wont get any more power by having one, just means you don't have to step on the pedal as hard. You get much better feel through the pedal without a booster. My prefference.

3.4 will sit a bit nicer on the FWY. (less revs)

could opt out of the booster, but i'll look into it....
as for diff, my great daily commute to work takes me five minutes
on a bicycle...... not saing i'll never hit a freeway, but it'll be far and
few between. most driving for me (unfortunately) is stop start
city driving........grrrrrr. Just want it to be zippy to say 60 or 80kph.
hence the 3.6??

I'm reading this with interest with a view to a future engine rebuild. I have seen mini race cars without the brake booster so as to reduce weight and give the driver greater feel in braking and also because you want to go flat out. If I have a booster now would I leave it in being a road car? Do some people that have them in a road car pull them out and is this legal? This is a genuine question not a smart arse comment and I appreciate any advice on this subject.
Also, would you put in staright cut gears if you are going to do this much work or are they striclty a racing thing?
Cheers.

3.6 diff would suit you then. Different for you guys in this place called Sydney I guess.

Flute. My 1275 LS has 8.4" discs with no booster stock from the factory. Probably doesn't answer your question, but I like the car like that!

Flute, if you swap between a modern car (Holden/Ford/whatever) and the mini, it can take some getting used to not having a brake booster so you might be better off leaving it as is. You do have to step on the pedal fairly hard to get maximum braking.

That said, my 1430 road car was upgraded to unboosted 8.4" discs and I love it :D

I run unboosted and I think it's no better than my inlaw's 2008 corolla brake wise. Our car has Brake Assist and ABS so the brakes are far more responsive and powerful but that's a $1500 option on our brand new car.

I think properly padded 7.5 inch brakes with well maintained rears and new master cylinder without a booster is absolutely fine. Can lock them up quite easily. You'd have to seriously be a granny with chicken legs if you can't lock them up, seriously...

Hey Flute,

I have talked this through with QLD transport engineers, they say it is fully legal to have the discs unboosted (cooper S 7.5" type). As for down south??

I really like the unboosted discs (again it's a personal preference thing!) but if you already have one in place it seems a shame to take it out to sit on a shelf and perish away.

Straight cut gears are all about getting the most power from the crank to the wheels. For a road car the helical cut gears are best! (Stronger, & Quieter) Look into a closer ratio set of the helicals maybe?

Cheers

Matt
