Why are the cars being cut up for?

Because you cannot legally bring them in to Oz in one piece

Without revealing trade secrets, where do they come from? Japan? Just interested as most of the 90s minis in the UK seem to be pretty horrendous when it comes to rust. I would have thought they would be in demand over there.

I have no qualms about minis getting cut up. The later ones are less desirable to me, and enable older cars to keep going, albeit with 1275 motors, brakes and other buttery goodness. I'm not a huge fan of walnut dashes and the whole sportpac look - retro rally for me :)

Yeah, it's just the economic truth of it.

I'm not sure that there's even places in the UK that operate like Brickworx. Not to say there aren't any but I've never heard of any.

I'm sure people have done the sums and found it hard to justify the shipping against the returns. I'd assume the shipping from Japan to OZ is much cheaper than to UK which would sway the balance somewhat...

In some ways it's very sad as I'm sure that minis are now an appreciating asset, prices for good ones keep going up and you'd probably have no problem getting them rego'd in the UK as whole cars - just takes someone with deep enough pockets to make the effort before Steve has them all chopped up! Oh to win the lottery....

EDITED to add:
And shipping them after they've been cut means you get a lot more in a container - which I'm sure makes a BIG difference to costs. (Also imported as parts, not cars which makes import duties and taxes different - I assume less?!?)

Yes they are from Japan...
i paid extra and bought decent auction cars, then i know they run and drive.
No wreckers crap.
What i would like(trying to do a deal now) is to send all the rust free shells to Europe. All i want is the parts out of it.

rubber cone leyland minis still had the tunnels, what I am wondering is if they can be used as replacement floor pans for hydro tunnel front floors
Hydro tunnels were only used in Australia. They were not used in the UK. So these floors will not have hydro tunnels.

Japanese half-cut regulations. My daily driver is a ST184 Celica. The 3SGTE engine is readily available here due to Japanese halfcut regulations.
