Why would the man settle for a tarted up MK1 with cheap placky flares Simon :?: :P

cos it's got a 4 synchro gearbox and a nicer badge :)

A synchro box for people who are too impatient or have no mechanical sympathy or who failed double-declutching 101....and that highly desirable plastic oval that fades in the Aussie UV rather than a nice chrome badge :!:

The all synchro S box is nice but the ratios less so than Mk1S. But 1st gear is stronger... :D

pfft, righto Mick.... a MK 2 is what I've always wanted, tarted up MK 1 or not - but it is lovely to be able to flick from 2nd to 1st while going around a motorkhana post with one swift movement, and my oval badge is just fine :P

That placky badge would have to be the sexiest looking thing BMC ever popped out in the badging department imho...I've got the original silver AND the Morris british domestic market black version here as well.

A well known collector recently offered $45k for my 1970 mk2 S with well documented race history in restored condition. Not nearly enough to get it to leave my garage. I guess it is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it.

I would say that at the moment a Mk1 complete and running but requiring restoration is worth approx $10,000, a Mk2 in similar condition $12,000.

A very good clean original (or older restored) Mk1 is worth approx $14,000 - 15,000 and a Mk2 in similar condition $17,000 -$18,000.

A freshly restored Mk1 approx $20,000 and a Mk2 $22,000. Anything above this, in my view, requires something special (such as the above post...race history etc...).

I think the market is showing that restoring a Cooper is certainly not a money maker (very few cars are). The statement in the above post that "it is worth what the market is willing to pay" is totally correct. However, the number of people willing to pay the dollars diminishes as the dollar value increases.

As you can see, my view is that the Mk2 is rarer, more livable to drive and as a result worth more than a Mk1. Even though, I think the Mk1 is the more pure car and better looking as in pretty, not mean!

Either way, they will only become rarer and worth more...

My estimations are based on recent auction sale prices, selling prices of private sales (word of mouth through club), Ebay sales etc.... In the last week on Ebay we have seen a tidy Mk1 (older restoration) sell for $15,000 with one bid and another one which still has not sold at $16,500.

I was recently offered $35,000 for my MK1 Cooper S while it was in the shop getting some work done to it! Yes it ticks all the boxes for correctness, inc Westmister carpets, Steel RIms, trim.......

I dont agree that theres any great difference in value between the Mk1 and Mk2 . Of course the Mk2 WAS rarer , as only half as many were made . The Mk1 however has a much better and longer racing pedigree , and therefore more desirable by many people , and as so many were raced in the early years , and a great many modified or destroyed , an original spec Mk1 is just as scarce now as the Mk2 .......

Thanks for your info and estimates - this gives me a good guide for my hunt......

Just might need a hand one day to tell if genuine!
