IMO with what you said you want I'd recommend changing the diff. It will depend on what you have now as to what you should get to accelerate faster.
Any mini friendly place should be able to do this, it would be a lot cheaper if you take the engine out yourself and simply take the diff in. That way you might have some money left over to tart up your carby a bit  .

(I think you need to remove the engine to get the diff out :? can someone correct me if I'm wrong).

aside from the fact that I think changing the diff is a dumb idea, you can't just change the crown wheel, the gearbox needs to come off the motor, and the side off the gearbox to change the pinion.... and a gearbox refresh (layshaft, couple of bearings) is a necessity when you've got it that far open - you're looking at an $800 job

DJ,
A well modified cylinder head is all you need to increase the volumetric efficiency (the amount that the cylinders can be filled with the fresh fuel air mixture) of your engine enough to give you a very significant increase in performance. Far more than you will expect.
While cams and carbs are always first on the list for the novice tuner it is the cylinder head on the BMC A series engine that is the weakest link, the good news is that there is plenty of room for improvement!
Your standard cam, carb and exhaust should be fine for the increase in performance I think you are after and you will retain your original under bonet look.

Two other things you should ensure are right are the compression ratio and the ignition.

Dave
