I have just finished rebuilding a 1275/gearbox and doing all the machining and work myself it still cost around 2 Ks just for all the parts. When you decide to do your eng. allow for rebuild things like radiator, starter, alt. distriutor and all the little bolt on bits that mysteriously do not work after you start to do up the main bits.

Agree- gaskets and seals add up then if you doing it to that extent may as well get it near perfect - just had to get new bushes for the gear change lever as they were worn 20 thou one way and 17 thou the other - bit of a slop  now the gear change should be a bit smoother

Not sure you would need 1.3 offset rockers. The std ones will see your build through fine. I would spend the $$ on other area's

If you want a mini to perform, start with the head, thats the biggest restriction. Spend some $$ and talk to Graham Russell about head work (to what you can afford) and an RE13 camshaft to suit.
HS4, opened up head, RE13 and an exhaust will suprise you in terms of power gains and performance.

Cheers,
Peter

The 1.3 rockers give you higher lift and hence more power. Great for a racing car where you want to get the absolute maximum but probably not necessary in a road car.

It would be a good idea to have a chat with Graham Russell. He's a good guy and really knows his stuff. He will tell you exactly what you need to get the result you want within your price range. He won't point you towards big dollar mods either.

I have built quite a few performance Mini engines over the years but the one that Graham spec'd and machined up for me goes way better than any I had done. The quality of his machining is top notch, I measure all the clearances while assembling and it was all absolutely spot on. Impressive. I'm a very happy customer.

Don't confuse offset bushed rockers with 1.5:1 high lift rockers.
Putting UK made offset bushes into pressed steel or Cooper S forged rockers give you about 1.25:1, which is the ratio a standard rocker should have, but never does- I found they vary from 1.16 to 1.21:1.

The ones I make here by converting pressed steel rockers have .044" offset and give a 1.3:1 ratio.
On a smallbore 1098 1.3s are worth a few HP, according to Vizard.
On a bigbore they will give you a bit more all the way up, great for road use.

1.5:1 rockers (forged or roller) are used on 1275 and up race motors, they give more top end (4500 up) at the expense of bottom end torque. Pretty much a waste of time on any roady smallbore.
I run them in our 1293 and 1360, as I don't mind losing a bit of lowdown torque. 8)
