71 clubman originally had a remote/solid change. And you cannot change a rod change gearbox into a solid change gearbox through changing the diff housing, they are differnt all together. So your gearbox has been changed

Yep, beat me to it.
Yes I knew it was a rod change now - the fact I said it was originally a remote was that we had to make some mods to the floor pan to fit the rod change originally. I was previously under the belief that ALL clubbies had rod change boxes, but maybe mine being so early, still had a remote. It also has hydro not dry suspension.

eventually I might get another case and remote, and change it back one day. Gearchanges seem to be more precise and smooth with a well recoed remote, well DrMini's is anyway 8)

They didn't change to the rod-change till about 73(?) The change was nothing to do with Minis, it was due to making the Mini box fit the new Austin Allegro.
Also they change of rod vs remote was not at the same time as the rubber vs pot joints.

:D My 5cents worth.......
If its a rod change maybe the "sleave" that connects the rod to the selector shaft has an elongated hole where the roll pin goes through stopping you from selecting 1st & 3rd but because you push the rod forward to select 2nd, 4th & reverse it is touching/pushing the selector shaft forward in the gearbox enough to do this. The roll pin could also be bent/worn at the sleeve or the one in the housing where the gear stick goes, or the gearstick its self could be worn on one side like the clutch arms do, or the guts of the housing could be worn or broken on one side where the shifter goes.
Oh check all the engine mounts/steadies and cotton reel bushes.
Enjoy

I had a very similiar problem when we were putting mine back together one day after replacing the subframe. It only ended up being the selector had rolled over when were putting it back on the gearbox. Could be very similiar. Only took 10 minutes to fix it. Had us stumped for a week though.

Hi Kirsten,

I'd get an opinion from an actual mini mechanic unless you feel like trying to troubleshoot it all yourself. Guys that specialise in minis will almost certainly be cheaper than your friendly neighbourhood mechanic, and then there are a few on here who have a lot of knowledge.

I'd suggest calling the MiniMan or Ken Nelson at Mini Automotive, or if you want a good bloke who isn't a mechanic to come look first, pm David, "64cooper" on here, he'll give you help where he can. What part of brizzy are you in?

Cheers

Matt

MINI IS FIXED!!!!!!!

OMG OMG OMG

Took mini over to my mechanic - who I should have said at the start is an actual mini man (World Champion Mini Racer...back in his time :P...so he knows his stuff lol)

Turns out the 'spline on the right hand side was slipping inside the clamp'...in other words "the bolt was loose"

Bit of lock-tight and all will be be-u-ti-ful again!

Now I can relax again for a bit lol.

Thank you to everyone for your input, it was greatly appreciated. It's so nice to know there are lots of you out there willing to lend me your time and tools if needed :D Almost puts a lump in my throat just knowing that people actually care

I look forward to meeting you all at the Mini Muster...not long now 8)

hehehe sorry but this boy's a keeper (even though he keeps jokingly telling me that he's going to kidnap me one day so his mates can steal my mini and turbo it lol) NO CHANCE! :P

Good on you Kirsten.

Going by this it was on the back of the motor and towards the firewall. Haven't seen this thread till now  but I can understand this as it happened to me a little while ago. You Have a Remote change Gear Box. If you look under the Driver side door towards the centre you will see the exhaust then a Square section which should be silver in colour but possible blackish in oil  as they do. But if you see this box section its a remote.
What has happened as the bolts has lossened the shafts are not moveing as they should do in relation to you moveing the gear stick so it would not go into 1st and 3rd

Ok, just got my mini back and it turns out the bolt that was loose was one of the two bolts that hold the actual gear stick 'down and in place'...the thread was stripped.

So every time I tried to select 1st or 3rd gear, the stick would pop up out place and not go in to the slot.

Dad and I have just almost fixed it properly here back at home...taken the whole gear stick out and the plate too, cleaned it all up and now just waiting til tomorrow to put it all back together.
