Exhaust wrap works.
When I was first racing the HQ Holden we had to run Leaded Super petrol of about 97 octane. Pinging was a big problem. I found that with exhaust wrap I could run 2° to 4° more advance with a noticeable increase in power.
And the exhaust heat was not rising to cook the carby.

But the biggest difference was in the case of a red flaged race the car would not get a vapour lock in the carby when the race re-started.

hi, i'm a marine mechanic and i use the wrap a far bit. you need to install the rap wet which allows you to stretch the wrap easyer and when the rap dry's it pulls on it's self which makes it tighter again. you get a much better wrap on the extractors. use mig wire for holding the wrap together at the ends.

I got the HQ extractors in 1990. They had not rusted when I sold the car in 2004. The car sat outside and unused for a couple of years in the late 90s in the dampness of the upper Blue Mountains.

As far as I know the new owner of my car still has those extractors on it.

I never thought of that...I was using hose clamps to keep the ends from fraying....How do you keep the woven fibre from unravelling however? You probably have a paste to bind it all together right?

I used to tuck the ends under and then tie it up with mig wire.
