bugger... what a ning nong, he must've been on his P's for losing his license previously
My Cooper had an accident in the 70's, I knew there was damage when I bought it, and I last year I re-repaired the botched repair job - it would've been a very similar accident to what Tiny had, the windscreen pillar & door jamb had moved, and the door was pushed backwards into the door catch area - same as it looks like on Tiny - very tough to repair, and unfortunately not in the league of today's panel replacers - at least not the ones who will work for the kind of crap money insurance companies pay.
If they do write it off, have a good long think about the real value of the parts in the car, the engine (rebuilt X years ago, arm, but with doubtful lifespan based on what we've heard recently), interior, add-ons etc. etc - if it's really worth what they ask, then buy it, otherwise let it go, and maybe even follow it to auction and buy it there, but don't count on it.
When I crashed my blue cooper, the insurance company were very reluctant to let me buy it back, and my RACV (owned by NRMA) assessor really went in to bat for me and spent his personal time trying to get me as much money as he could, and helped me get it back - PM me for more detail
lastly, getting angry won't get you anywhere - if the assessor thinks you're a dickhead, then he'll treat you like one, if he thinks you're a genuine, sensible but unlucky kid who could be his son, then he'll treat you like one - who do you think he'll help the most?
best of luck
