Not quite what sports was looking for in the lower end price but Jaguar x-type 2.2 litre is alot cheaper.

A couple of people going for the swift. With the price compareo, the poverty pack ones can be had for $17k drive away, not sure what other brand new cars you can get for that dollar figure these days. Has dual airbags, CD player, leather bound steering wheel, ABS and electric windows all standard. Pretty good features for a base model. So a bit more flash then a 850.

The next model up is mainly badges, driving lights and a spoiler. So i guess that could be a deluxe. It costs more anyways!!!

Then the sports version is priced a bit high but actually has features to make it quicker then the others and stop better. So i guess it could be classed as the Cooper S?

i'd have to say suzuki swift..

a) it is one of the few hatchbacks which have a cult following like the mini does..

b) you can get away with personalising a swift without looking stupid as well.. stripes over the body etc.. in the same way people do minis..

c) it epitomises everything the mini was.. small, cheap and fun!

Doogie

My Deluxe does this :D

It's not meant to though :!: It is running a generator and as the revs go down so too does the voltage resulting in less volume :D

So does our Volvo, apparently. The problem is when it's going fast, I'm too busy paying attention to the road to notice...

+1 vote for the Suzuki Swift. Jezza Clarkson likes it, I like it. The moral successor to the Mini. All new cars need airbags and other crash protection measures or they won't sell, so all new cars will be substantially heavier and larger than the Mini, bambina etc, but yup Suzuki Swift FTW.

I dunno, I've seen a Swift with Cooper stripes and a colour coded roof. It looked crap.
But other than that one car I'd have to agree.
:D

Undoubtedly some good modern cars among this lot. But I wonder how many will still be around in 40 years time, or even remembered, far less have a worldwide cult following. I wonder how many will have won Bathurst or the Monte Carlo Rallys, or the ETC or BTCC, and countless other motorsport events. How many will spawn a whole tuning and accessories industry which must have generated enormous wealth over the years. How many will become cross generational icons that so many people can identify with. None I would say, and that goes for the BMW MINI as well.

the world of motorsport has changed a little since the mini won Bathurst as has the world car design. There are many cars of the mini era that have generated industries, won in motorsport. Despite the fact I love the mini, I can name quite a few cars of similar vintage that have cult following - thay may not be as good by thousands love them and keep them going.

No modern car is going behave like an old one and versa visa - the world has moved on from DIY maintenance and basic motoring and it has done so because thats what people want.

I had thought of the Lancer and Impreza , not sure if the WRX and Evo's are as attainible to average people on a budget like the S was in it's time . They certainly fit the bill otherwise though with models in the range covering all fields .

the Suzuki Swift is looking pretty close though , I hadn't realised their sports model was more powerful , I thought it was like a lot of other ones that have mag wheels , spoilers and nothing else .
