My Gran couldn't get her seatbelt undone once, she would have been trapped in the car. Luckily she had her sewing scissors in her handbag so she snipped the belt. It was fine though, she put a safety pin through the two pieces and re-joined them.

How about re-lining bearings with slices of coke can? A friend of mine swore by it in our student days.

I've heard of someone extending their seatbelt using a length of chain on the mounting point.

I had a mate did that to his Standard 10 (shows how long ago this was eh, kiddies) but he used brown paper, he filed the caps too.
Of course, he was a marine engineer.. perhaps they taught him that. :P

I had my 998 blow a head gasket so took it into the local mini shop and got them to fix it and jazz up the head at the same time, $2000+ later it was all done and came with a 12 month warranty.
With in less than 12 months it went through 7 head gaskets and they ended up saying they would no longer honor their warranty

Have you ever met a mechanic who thinks he is a "Bad Mechanic" :?:
The same as you will never meet anyone who thinks they are a "Bad Driver"
I am sure no one deliberately starts a job with the intention of doing it badly. They just don't know the difference nor can they see it when its pointed out to them !
Food for thought ?

Dave

INMO................

They may have turned into "bad mechanics" due to poor supervision during thier later years as an apprentice, they lose thier passion/enthusiasm for cars, rush up - f@%k up attitude of the work place management or they get lazy and just dont care after a while and are not willing to change.

 I've seen many great mechanics get screwed over quite badly by management that their quality and or quantity go right out the window and slowly start to screw the business of which they eventually leave to go somewhere else, or they leave the trade altogether.

 For example; I know a bloke who has been in the trade for 35 years, had up until a few years ago ever been employed with this one particular brand, worked with many rally teams around the world including the world rally team of this brand, could rebuild a gearbox, including in and out of the car in 2 hours and an engine in 4 hours. He wasnt on much more $$$$ than myself, so rightly so he asked for a pay rise, was told they would review his work times etc, etc .....then got told no, so from then on he did all the work to the time allowed be it warranty or retail, then got grilled about why he wasnt putting the same effort into his work, his reply was .........................
"Do you really need to ask me this question?
im doing it to the time allowed/given, no more and no less.
Has thier been any come backs due to my workmanship?"
management answer "No".

Anyways he left about 6 months later once he had set up his own workshop and many of the customers from that "workshop" now go to him.
Oh his quality and quantity came back once he left......funny about that :!: :!:

I had a prefessional Jag engine man rebuild a competetion e-type engine with a c-type head. The the oil bangos to the head kept leaking, he forgot to put the fibre washers underneath  , so he used silicone to stop the leak and in doing so blocked the oil flow to the head  . Less than 100km later many droped valves, three broken pistons, a cracked head and a busted timing chain :x .

Got it back under warranty though  but that was the beginning of the end for that engine.

Jag engines are usually only good for 100km after a rebuild anyway :P
