Hey John et al,
While we're on the subject of jewel cut, etc. Neither speedo has a telltale at 60mph for turn signals being on.

The 1970 has two green jewel-cut turn signal warning lights. These are on the sides of the speedo, on on the big oval near the smaller gauges. They are nearer to the bottom of the oval.

On the 1966, someone had put in a homemade wooden dash, and moved the o/p and water temp gauges under the dash, but the metal oval is still there to hold the speedo. On it, there are two holes in roughly the same location, but nearer the top of the oval.

Would the '66 have had the same jewel-cut green lights, and would they have been towards the top or the bottom? Haven't looked closely yet at whether the oval can be turned upside-down, i.e. if the green jewel lights should be down on the '66 or up on the '70, or neither. I also need to replace the turn signal switch with the blinking one.

Pre 1980 all had the same gearing 17/6
The A+ brought out varing ratios .... don't know if compatible or not with older gearboxes (anyone know?)

Thanks Winabbey. Based on what I know now, I'd have to say that the first ebay link is a 1071 or 970 speedo, because it has the green blinker at 60 (Parnell p. 29). My MKI speedo has no such light, but the car has the blinking turn signal lever instead. Also has the 120+10 (5?) markings.

The second ebay link looks like my MKII which is very very original.

Both cars in my case have the "pointed" chrome rings around all three gauges.

So this is the source of my confusion--so far, most minis I've seen only have one telltale green light--either on the speedo (later), on the oval, or on the turn signal lever. On my MKI, there are holes for the green lights on the oval in addition to the turn signal lever's light. Would the MKI normally have both telltales, i.e. lever and oval? If on the oval, would they be high or low?

Lionel Otto the local Speedo rebuilders/calibrators told me this method to collect the data they need.

Have the car on a flat hard surface with plenty of room in front to roll the car foreward.
Disconnet the cable from the back of the speedo and stick a little 'flag' on the end of the inner cable so you can see it rotate and count the revolutions.
Mark the point where a non driving wheel (ie rear) touches the floor.- floor and tyre.

Push the car foreward for 2 - preferably 4 if you have room- revolutions of the wheel. Count the number of revolutions of the 'flag' on the speedo cable.

Measure distance travelled and divide by the number of wheel rotations.
divide the number of speedo cable rotations by the number od wheel rotations so you end up with the averages for one wheel turn.

Take your speedo and the information of cable turns per one wheel rotation and distance traveled per wheel revolution to the specialist speedo calibrator and they will do the rest

Wow.

I knew my speedo was out after i had a new engine/gearbox put in. Could never be bothered to try to figure it out. Too confusing for a maths simpleton like me.

In the end I just went out with the Tomtom suctioned to the windscreen and found that the indicated mph on the speedi was exactly half the actual kph. Early on I would always use the Tomtom as a speedo, but now i just do the doubling/halving automatically.
