your dad went "boonta" in my day that word meant doing something rather vigerous to another persons bottom...
there was a good joke around, where a guy was given the choice of punishments by the tribe that caught him, of either death or boonta... he chose death... but the tribe called "death by boonta"..

Let them read this post. Tell them that any person on this forum is willing to help you with any problem or parts (if they're worried about that stuff). Tell them you'll love them TWICE as much as you do now. That you will ALWAYS come home with a smile on your face (just from driving it). Other than that... sulk, cry, chuck a tantrum (which you've already done?) until they give in.

I got the heck out of home as soon as I was 18  Ahhh just one of the joys of being an adult owning your own home!!

If you are financially responsible for yourself then they shouldn't have too much of a say in your decisions. Except to offer guidance & support. But if they are financially contributing to the cost then er..ummm..Good luck

Pity you don't live closer to me I could've helped you out..

Well, being ancient (37.9) I think they may have a point with respect to Minis in an accident. Almost none have side impact protection, they are lower than some SUVs bonnets, and their steering columns are more or less designed to spear you through the chest, The seats don't attach at the back (in mine at least). The crumple zone consists of your feet and legs. The first ones were death traps - non-burstproof latchs, no seatbelts and the fuel filler dumped onto the hot 'zorst in an accident.

They have passive safety features though, like nimble handling and light weight. There are anecdotes about surviving accidents, but they are not as safe as a modern car - car design has moved on a lot in the last 40 years. To say otherwise is just fooling yourself.

But that's not why people like them. They're simple, you can do useful things to make them better, and they have character. You can learn how a car works, how to tune them and express your personality through them. But they are not as safe as a post-1997 Corolla for example.

Yes Erin old Minis are much less safe than new 4cyl cars. But just as safe as eary yank iron. (perhaps safer) if your Dad likes to work on cars etc tell how much lighter an A series is than a small block & powerglide. I sold my chev so I could get a mini. leaves room for more in the garage. (another mini)
you coulld aways save for a 78 clubie. Intrusion bars child restrains (not a issue for you yet I hope) & other good things. Or get your dad in the idea of a Rover. Something less likely to be worn out. with all the mod cons including brakes.

You don't buy a car with the view to having an accident, so what car you buy is irrelevant.

Old cars are not unsafe. They were as safe as they could be when they were new and have not suddenly grown thorns on the inside! It is just that new cars are safer.
