MK II Cooper S (69-71) with BLMC factory fitted SPO 16, 26 and 41.

SPO stands for Special Production Order. These 3 SPO's are for vehicles delivered to Police specification.
SPO 16 is Lowered Frame Front Seats
SPO 26 is Competition Disk Brake Pads
SPO 41 covers a range of changes introduced in late 1970 for NSW Police Cooper S (e.g. 1 1/2" SU's, C-AEA 800 camshaft, exhaust, two-speed wipers, reversing lights, one-piece heatshield, modified distributor, handbrake warning light, tachometer).

If anyone knows the whereabouts of a such a car that was put straight into climate controlled secure storage after it came off the production line, is completely original and has less than 50 miles on the clock please let me know.

How could you store one when they went to the police?

Doogie

I suppose that's my point, Doogie. :) If I had one that wasn't actually delivered to Police then it would be super rare and unique. Obviously having an ex-Police version with all the tell-tale signs of its hard life and the Police components is the next best thing in my view.

By the way, Doogie, those are your steel wheels with Aquajets that are now on my ex-NSW Police MK II S when displayed. They look a treat.

My vote goes for Mk1 (or failing that Mk2) 1275 Austin Cooper S, red with black roof.

Me, I like vans. Vans, vans, vans.

But I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the Hot Rod, surely the best. Factory five speed, eight port, retailed for some ridiculous sum (30,000 pounds?) but they made eight I believe. I've googled me fingers off but can't find any reference now.

I can't pick a favourite, I haven't had the pleasure of driving too many. On the make up of a mini the Cooper S's probably do sum up the best, not too cluttered, simple classic look, good power and brakes etc etc but if I could chop and change and make my ultimate frankenstein mini it would be something like this;
Mk 1 shell
ERA turbo induction and head
A+ block (no dizzy)
Cooper S box
Pot joint CV's
Metro discs and calipers
Mk2 'S' flairs and wheels
Rover front and rear glass (electric demisters and rear is wider)
Deluxe doors
Dry suspension
Cooper S heater (smaller and look better than clubby ones)
1997 onwards seats and seat belts
And a Rover style dash (wood grain, 3 dials).

Because it has the 1071 engine, Disc brakes, booster, and all the S trimmings.

It also has the simplicity of the sliding windows & removable headlining.

Simple

Beautiful

Classic

Totally agree. Any mini with wind up windows simply isnt a proper mini, they just dont have the appeal for me.

Any mini that came off the line in my book is good coz they could all be at some stage parts / spares for the FANG.

mmm.....after some thought

1. Has to the Italian Job/60's mini cooper, it was of its time and stuck it to the bigger cars, and you could afford to own one.

2. Then the Rover >1990 making a 30+ year car cool again and making it work, ramping sales up again and bring the mini back to life with a whole new generation of fans (UK) - My favourite the The 500 Sportpack
