If I were to attach the rubber seal with contact cement or similar, does it matter which way around the rubber is positioned? If so, does the rubber slot opens towards the car or towards the boot lid.

In other words, forget the clips but see the pic I posted above, is that the correct orientation for the rubber seal?

Your pic is confusing...
If you look at my boot rubber, the only place I can see the lip ledge at all is near the hinges. It faces the centre of the boot.
I glued the Minisport rubber on years ago and it is still fine.

I used clips from ebay I think. Worked great, Except if it slips out of the lip of the rubber while pushing it in, can't really get them back out without bending them to bits.

That clip looks to be on the correct way. There are variations in clips an some are a bot too wide for the holes and also don't have sufficient spring and bend easily. I think Minisport sell the correct ones.
I usually press the place the clip on the rubber and then press into the holes by hand and slowly work around the lid. If the clip is tight I have a small pair of needle pliars to gently squeeze the clip as I press it in.
Good luck

Awesome thanks for the tips guys - I'll post up a pic once I've completed it, for your viewing pleasure :) will try with the clips but will fall back to the adhesive if needed.

For thread completion I have included an extract of a post from my build thread which details the boot lid seal installation process.
In my build thread I wrote:
Today I assembled the rear boot lid.

Firstly I installed the rubber boot lid seal.
Image

I used the clip method, rather than using contact adhesive. Other people have reported that the clips are a pain in the bum, but it was super easy and took all of 15 minutes from start to finish (I have heard that maybe there are different types of clips and some are too wide to get this job done easily).

The clip is at the bottom of the image and you can see the orientation of the boot lid so the later shots make sense.
Image

The rubber is positioned so the tongue/flap/slot of the rubber seal points towards the front of the car (more easily demonstrated in the picture below rather than trying to explain it). And the clip is attached like so...
Image

Then the clip is inserted into the holes that surround the boot lid
Image

...snip...

The boot lid shown on the inside as attached

...snip...

If you want to know specifics about the seal, I used:
  • a high quality boot seal as available from Minisport in SA "Mini boot lid seal on boot lid seal GENUINE soft seal 14A6584" (note that from what I read some aftermarket versions are crap, but this one was really good)
  • clips bought from Mini Kingdom "Clip, Boot Lid & Van Rear Door Seal (#14A6585) x26 = $28.60"

I hate to hijack the thread, but does the rubber strip join itself at the top or the bottom?
