Back already Matt! Good. Keep at it.

I take your points, ill shutup now about putting it in the dyno. As I said before - mine was more about miscommunication... thought you were ready for dyno but didnt want it. So ill take that as my fault.

But I do have one question - are you going to put the thing on a dyn... JUST KIDDING!

Ok, lets move on.

Pete

I would like to say my piece in this matter.

1 has anyone considered the countless man hours and $10,000's that Matt has put into his project. Until you complete a similar project yourself then most people would NOT have any idea of what is involved. I do because my cylinder head project has cost me more than $15,000 so far and 5 months work.

2 As far as flow testing heads I believe that this is a crock of crap. An engine is only going to use as much air as it is capable of. Do the maths. Yes there is a formula for calculating it. If an eng is only able to use 200 cfm and the head can flow at 400cfm you have not gained anything.

3 As for performance figures of these twin cam conv , just look at the the equipment you have. Why would eng designers build 16v/v heads if there was no benifit to the eng performance. All modern engs would still have cast siamese port heads!!! I know that matt has not dynoed one of his ,but I have done each of my test engines with a peramater analasis dyno set-up. This measures things like air flow/air density/ fuel flow/ exhaust temp/ cylinder firing pressure etc etc. All this information is relayed to the computer programme and with the basics of the eng[ bore/stroke ] calculates HP. Yes it is designed for bike race engs but is fairly accurate. That's what all the top race teams use for eng development. I use similar systems on large marine diesels to maintain peak performance when the engs are running. It's a bit hard to drag a 30,000hp eng to your local dyno place.

4 The BMW head[8 v/v ]was first done by a frenchman in 1996 and I know that a lot of other people have done similarwith mixed results. Some of the problems I put down to poor engineering design in the way they were put together, not the conversion as such. I have done a completely different head, and as Matt said ALL these conversions require some mods to either block and head. None of it is "just bolt on"

5 In regards to Matt's idea of the HP out of these engines I think that he is conservative. With a cbr 600cc race engine the power out put is over 160 hp but the torque is less due to the engine construction. I have deliberately run my engines to the extreme and I have pulled around 150 hp at 10,000 rpm out of a 1100 eng. with quad 45mm slide throttle race carbs. Yes it had all steel bottom end but I believe that the blocks will not handle this sort of punishment for long.

Personally I do not think that Matt has to answer anything. He has built them and they work and if anyone disbelieves then get off your arse and build one to prove otherwise. Just cut him some slack.

Remember one thing Reasearch is the difference between speculation and investment.

Ther are a lot of people who will speculate, but they have not put their money out to build a idea.

David, no one is disputing that the concept of a 8 port head is a bad thing. But the question remains, do they work well on a road going N/A motor, which is what I have asked. no one wants to have to pull 10k to get power on a motor and have it last 500kms.

I'll ask you as well if you would be so kind as to explain how a "Layman" would research a head as being "Good" for there purpose. I've asked it to all the experts so far with no answer. Please if you would be so kind to tell me how to go about getting the right information to make an informed choice.

Cheers mate

Aaron

OK Guys, I have read all the posts and can tell you this is is getting way out of hand.
I can see why Matt is so upset, It all comes down to one thing and that is Respect.
Guys like Matt Read and a few others on this board have had a passion for Mini's for many years.
During the years of the late 70's, 80's and well into the 90's when Mini's where worth nothing and no one wanted them men like Matt and a few others had a passion for restoring, working on and preserving these gems. It was probably a time before most of you young people where even born.
The wealth of Mini knowledge that the likes Matt, Dr Mini, and Morris 1100 have is a young mini entheusiasts greatest assett.
Not only Matt but all of these older more experienced guys deserve your RESPECT.
They give you the benifit of their many many years of experience for FREE, simply because they want to pass on their knowledge. for this they earn Respect!
Matt Read earns his living working on Mini's but here he gives information out for FREE!
Respect It!
I would love a dollar for every time I have seen Matt post a reply to a lame question
with accuracy and respect to the not so mini smart asker of the question.

I would ask you all who rely on the likes of Matt to show these guys the respect they deserve after all they don't have to answer your questions!!!

Dave

No they do not and you will notice that some of the other experts have had little to nothing to say.
We are moving on, are we not?
