This is a clubbie S grill (Cherry is a 76 Leyland Mini S). The top and bottom rail are shiny metal with the rest painted black.

I think Dicko's photo subtitled "Original as bought" is the key here. The other grills could have been painted over time. I remember friends a having clubman S at the time when they were new, and I think the grill is not the same as Swae's or the yellow car pictured, but more similar to the first photo dicko posted.

Have you tried looking in the book "mini's down under" for original photos?

Hmm... now you all have me thinking. I have always been told that my grill is original. It was like that when I got the car, I have only resprayed it as the black was flaking off.

Issue 12 of The Mini Experience, p28.

The feature shows differences between 1973 Mini Clubman S and 1978 Leyland Mini S.

The Clubman has been restored, but according to the owner it is exactly as it came from factory - he said the car was complete and original when he bought it, and he has stuck to the same spec. There are a couple of unusual items on the car - like the tan interior paint on the doors and the Gambier Turquois exterior paint (only listed for 1971-1973, but Viv assured me that is how the car originally was.

The early car also has hydrolastic suspension and 1098cc engine. The 1978 car of course has dry suspension and 998cc engine. This car has also been repainted, but was 100% original before being stolen and painted white (with house paint). Quite a story in that, but the car is otherwise completely original. The only things missing when we photographed it were there waist-level pinstripes, which are now on the car.

The grille on both cars is as shown in the posts above, and the radio only came with the single speaker below the radio (in a special mounting box in the centre of the parcel shelf/dash.

As far as I know all S model Minis had the three-gauge instruments, but I have heard a couple of times about some apparently only having the two-gauge setup. This seems a bit strange, as one of the advertised improvements in the Mini S was the three-gauge instruments.

Cheers,
Watto.

I agree with the last comment, I thought Leyland Mini's had 2 gauges as standard and the S had the added bonus of a tacho.

I dont have a pic of the original radio in my mini but I can confirm what Watto has said. NAV & I converted my original radio housing into a head unit hoder and the speaker part into a gauge holder. This pic shows how they bolted onto the dash (excuse the missing screw :P)

& this pic shows the chrome window surrounds that came standard for the S (this pic was taken before i touched up the grill paint )

I also have this hole in my rear parcel tray but not sure what it is for.
