Sounds like the engine and g/box need some love and $$$$'s to be made healthy again! No time like the present :D

If water jacket is in reasonable condition (no loose rust/scale) it's not essential to acid bath it. I never did any of mine in the past.
OTOH a 1275 that I bought from a member here was parked with the water jacket full of cruddy water for 20? years, heaps of loose rust so it has a date with Mr Molasses sometime soon. :D

when the engine is cold, turn on ignition (don't start engine) and see what the gauge reads...

regarding the hose hardness.. if it;s hard, there's a lot of pressure, which is due to a lot of heat. hotter engine, more heat, water expands more, higher pressure, harder hose.

sorry for the slight hijack,

so whats it mean if the guage reads higher than the normal line (not by much) and you squeeze the hose, and its flexible, ie, not hard? like i said before, when i squeezed it before it was hot as! but wasnt hard :?

ok so i turn ignition on when engine is cold and guage stays on C which means its hooked up right right?. my dad drove his to orange and had no problems didnt even get over normal and i start mine up for 30 seconds and its on H but the engine does not feel as though it is as hot as my dads and does not give off as much heat. would running the car without a thermostat help in any way?

Running it without the thermostat is counter productive , the water needs to be slowed down enough to have a chance to cool , without a thermostat it runs through too fast . Also a thermostat lets the motor warm up quicker .

Cherry's temp gauge reads about 5mm off hot all the time. If your engine doesnt feel hot but she's reading hot then my money is on the gauge. The fuel gauge issue also makes me think possibly voltage reg (we think that is what is wrong with mine )
