A good start would be to make sure your carpet underlay is all there and in good condition then move to the bulkhead and if it is still a bit loud make sure the foam is still in place around the gap between the rear parcel shelf and the outer part of the body (easy to see from inside the boot).

As for all the people who have written only useless ramblings that are of no help to will at all I have one piece of advice, find something better/more constructive to do. I would like to think the ausmini community is above poking fun at someone for asking a sensible question.

I was going to make the usual smart-arsed comment about turning the radio up......

Tru-Fit supply a new product called Resomat, as I see from the latest Just Cars mag. Might be worth enquiring http://www.tru-fitcarpets.com.au

Yeah, I was going to make a comment along the lines of "be helpful"

The noise can be mitigated in three ways: Insulation, mass and resonance.

You can insulate yourself from the noise with underlay, carpet and so on.

You can add mass to the panels to minimise the vibration of the sound.

You can reduce the resonance by stiffening the exhaust or the panels.

You should also make sure there's no air leaks in the bulkhead (behind the speedo hole for example if you have a central speedo).

I'd try the suggestions above but add trying exhaust wrap and looking at the exhaust mounts. A looser exhaust is going to sound louder than one tightly secured, but you may run into problems if it is too rigid (fracturing brackets, exhaust joints etc).

They also come in handy for listening to BIAM working in the garage , not for the grinder/welder noise , for the screaming ...

:P You will also need a pair of safety goggles to protect your eyes from the spray of blood when working anywhere with BIAM!!

Back to the question, you will never get rid of all the noise. Had a similar problem in my wifes car so I got 3mm thick crushed recycled rubber from clark rubber and put it under the carpet, up the firewall to the top dash rail on the inside and then put some in the engine bay where the original matting went......made a massive difference, we didnt have to shout when we talked in the car and could hear the radio. I think it was $3 or $5 per metre.

Just make sure anything you put in the engine bay is heat rated for the application , don't want it putting off noxious fumes that can get into the cabin ...
