is SPi the same as EFI?

My Rover is EFi and is Auto and runs a dream.

I am curious though about the comment of using it as a clutchless manual (ie run through the gears rather than just leave it in Auto...). Wouldnt this damage the box over time? Auto boxes are meant to cope with changing automatically surely?

My mother had an acccident in her car today. She's all Good. But she said they may rite it off. She started by saying ill get just a small car if they Do. "Hay I know a nice Rover Mini with Aircon up for sale"
My Mum and Dad had Many Mini's in thier time.
She said if I was a little younger I'd think about it. But No

SPi and MPi are different versions of EFI that were used on Minis. Starting around 92 (open to correction on this date), they started with SPi - Single Point Injection. Then, around 96, they moved to MPi - Multi Point Injection. Two injectors, closer to the valves, which lessened the length of 'wet' manifold, which improved emissions. Which is why manufacturers are now going to Direct Injection. Both changes - SPi and MPi - were done just in time to meet emissions standards. Without them, the Mini would've been killed, as the A Series (well, A+) would've been illegal to sell. SPi and then MPi contributed nearly an extra decade to the Mini's lifespan. :D

most Rovers in aus are spi, because most have come here from Japan - mpi was never available in Japan

Well, mine's an SPI.

There was an issue when I first got it which was made worse because:

(1) I had absolutely no knowledge of EFI in any way shape or form; and,

(2) I was pig-headed and determined to figure it out for myself. Good combo for doing your own head in.

Anyway, once I gave up and handed the car to Greig Malure to sort out, he had it back to me within a couple of days. It was just an intermittently faulty crank angle sensor.

That was over a year ago and everything's been sweet ever since.
