my sister's clubman did the same thing. went thru 2 batterys, is now runnin fine with MY battery out of my matic. Turns out, was just two crap (still brand new) battery's. like everything, good batches, bad batches

yep I'd believe that..

I bought a Champion which I believe is an exide rebadged, put it in, nothing, dead.. jump start, drive around, would get some charge - would start after leaving it for 15 minutes, but not overnight..

put it on the trickle charger for three days, been great ever since!

I sometimes take my batteries in to my local parts store and let them charge it up on their battery charger and then load test it. I could get my own load tester but they will do it for me for free so I haven't bothered yet. Also I've got a great automotive/marine electric shop that will do a whole series of tests on alternators etc that do checks for free as well. I had an alternator in past that checked out fine on the testing machines in parts stores but I changed out the alternator with a spare that a friend let me borrow and my problem went away. So I was quite sure my alternator was the problem. So I took it to this shop I speak of and the ran it on their much more involved testing machine but they also did things like tap it with a hammer and warm it with a torch. Eventually they found a fault and we replaced the voltage regulator that was faulty, cheap and easy. Great shop.
Clean and check all the connections in your charging system as well, sometimes is something real simple. I had a problem one time where everything checked out okay but the charging system was still failing. It turns out one of the wires going into the back of the plug was nearly broken off. I fixed that up and no problems again.
You really should check both the charging system and the battery and really figure out what is going on.

When you have done that, it is easy to check the voltage across the battery when the engine is running and compare it to when the engine is off. You may have to rev the motor above 1000 rpm since you have a generator fitted.

As advised before, buying a multimeter is money well spent and essential if you want to save even more by troubleshooting your own electrical problems.

A brand new battery is more likely to be faulty than a twelve month old one.
It has not been tested under operating conditions yet.

I don't think anyone has suggested checking the levels in the battery. It could well be that your battery is one of those that you're meant to be able to open and top up, but it's not a bad place to start.

Just some friendly advise. If I were you I would get the car tested and stop guessing at the fault. It will cost you more if you don't do it right the first time. Just go to a battery place and get them to diagnose the fault. Don't buy their battery if you don't believe them. At least you will get a free diagnose. As for replacing the Generator without knowing if the one you have is at fauly or without testing the one you are fitting could end up being the introduction of another fault to the car. Again why try and guess. Also make sure that the person testing knows how to test a generator and it's circuit because most Auto Sparkies today would not have a clue and all they want to do is replace stuff not repair. Called Trial and error not professionalism. Good luck.

Or perhaps follow the practice of our IT geniuses - replace the whole lot and just send the bill to the customer!
