Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm having another look at it now, and I'm suspicious that what I thought was the 'bottom' of the hole (where the seals go) is actually another seal.. I think this because there's only about 4 or 5mm between the edge of the housing and the bottom of the hole, and I don't see how 3 seals could possibly fit into that space!

To confirm my suspicions, does anybody know how deep the hole should be when empty of seals?

i have once or twice taken the selector out when doing a rebuid and stuck it in the lathe and put a spiral grove on it that ends up in a groove that goes all the way round the shaft to try and keep the oil in. It's worked so far

It's a lot more than 4 or 5mm, like I said I have seen 3 seals in there.
