never understood the reason for the dimmer switch.

Why would you want to dim them in the first place?

When you drive on country roads in the middle of the night it can be very dark outside (city people are not used to this as they have streetlights and city glare)
When it is really dark outside the dash lights can be very bright by comparison, so it can be very usefull to be able to dim the lights a little to reduce the strain on your eyes.

And also why they had a switch to turn the instruments off in the earlier cars. That and to stop the kangaroo's knowing how fast your going

Panel light dimmer switches is part of Compliance for cars in Australia as an ADR. Like I always say ANOTHER DUMB RULE.

Well the smoke is not all back in the red wire yet. I fixed the no plate lamp where it shorted out, but it's gone to ground somewhere else, up in the roof or A pillar. :x
My crystal ball sees a new red wire running next to the existing green fuel pump one, down the LH hydro channel in the floor. :P
I'm out of work right now, so NO it's not getting a new rear loom.

All fixed now, it turns out the loom was OK from the Molex plug back.
A wiring error last year (when reassembled) caused it....

It beats fishing replacement wires through subframes, underbody and engine bay...I love a simple fix.

I had to rewire from switch to Molex plug (which I bypassed with this circuit coz contacts heated and melted plastic) and I now have a 10A line fuse from the switch onwards (parkers only).
