I would also guess that the remote extension mount is broken. That will cause the gearstick to jump up and down when you take off.

I'm of the opinion that if you arent willing to do things properly when it comes to classic cars (ie either have a mechanic look after it or take the serious time to learn yourself) then you shouldn't have one. Stick to automatic transmission Excels with monster tachos and a shift light.

I actually flat out told one guy that came to look at my rover not to buy it, because he didnt even know how to check the tyre pressure.

hey come one everybody has to learn somehow. Its not his fault it broke. Thing is, as the car as is, it passed blueslip - which is meant to be the "safety check" and all these things have gone wrong since. i think he musnt be much of a blue slip man.

First his brake line pipe was full of garbage which he fixed - should have been picked up in blue slip. Then he left his cap off by accident.. which consequently got air into it.....

Anyway i had a look for him (big brother) and this time it was not his fault (although spirited driving probably contributed). I had a look and somebody had bodged it before by the looks of it before he got it. It was bought complete and running and he hasn't done much to it at all.
It was the engine steady where it attached near the master cylinders had come loose.

Sorry about the isze of the photo - i couldnt be bothered reducing it

Quick hint, when you put it back together, put the bolt through so the nut is on the bottom. That way if the nut vibrates off, there is still a pin (the bolt) holding it.

Cheers

looks like a fun job.............

remove master cylinders, cotter pins/split pins in pedals (ugh)
remove and repair/replace engine steady mount.
replace m/c's bleed both clutch & brake systems.

but may as well..........

overhaul m/c's seeing theyr'e being taken off
drain & replace fluid in clutch & brake lines
may as well, check the clutch slave & wheel cylinders whilst your'e at it.
And the flexible brake hoses for chafing/deterioration.

Whilst the drums/calipers are off
may as well, check wheel bearings, repack & adjust
while bearings are out, check & replace cv joint boots & drive shaft boots
check pads/shoes for wear. replace & adjust as required.
Discs/drums may need machining. Possibly oversize brake shoes needed too.

While the drive shafts are off, check the inboard pot joints/hardy spicer unis.
Check the diff seals, may need to remove the exhaust extractors to gain access.
removing diff seals means oil drains out. May as well drain the oil completely & replace oil filter at the same time.

While extractors are off, may as well check exhaust mountings etc
Since youv'e had to remove the extractors & inlet manifold/carbies, may as well gain access to the rear engine block drain plug. Remove & give the cooling system a good flush.

Anything that I have missed?

The trick with minis is to get the car to a point where you can predict what will go wrong next. If it's a big problem then fix it, if it's small leave it. If you fix he small problem a big one will pop up.

Absolutely true. I'm not quite there yet with my van, but I know exactly what is going to let go next on my K.. I even have the part sitting in the car just in case it happens before I get around to replacing it
