yeah i agree with nav, keys should bo tight,if not and theres movement then they will let go.

I feel I must put you all right on this one.
The the Drive from the Crank shaft to the Flywheel is NOT THROUGH THE KEY IN THE WASHER! That key in the washer is to ensure propper alignment on the crankshaft and flywheel only!
The taper on the crank and in the flywheel is what takes the load.
If you are relying on the key in the washer to do the driving you are going to have problems.
When fitting a flywheel to the crank taper always insure the tapers are in good condition , clean and free of burs.
Lap the flywheel onto the crackshaft with fine lapping paste and check with bearing blue and clean well.
And thats how you do it!
Dave

What I think I missed in my post was that if the flywheel bolt is torqued up on a key that is not sitting correctly or in the wrong way around the full clamping force of the bolt wont be transferred to the flywheel and the taper on the tail of the crank.
When all the key is ment for is to align the crank and flywheel.

Check that the flywheel bolt is not too long.
Screw it in without the plate, to make sure it'll clamp when assembled.
Recently I got GR to balance an A+ crank and flywheel assembly, and he had to take 2mm off the bolt length as it was bottoming in the hole.

Dave P came over last night to help out with Slidey. This is our story.
Firstly Dave had bead blasted all of clutch/flywheel assembly. He made up some special spacers to go under the flywheel straps too.
He got his little Dremel out and cleaned up a minor burr around the keyway inj the tail of the crank.
He lapped the flywheel
He checked the mating surface with bearing blue to ensure a perfect fit.
Then to the flywheel bolt thread. Using an old bolt he made a tap and cleaned out the threads. Winding the bolt in and out the thread. The thread in the crank had gunk in it. This could have given a false reading on my torque wrench and caused the problem in the first place.
Dave fitted the flywheel and clutch.
Wok back on and all good.
Then it was time to start Slidey.
After mucking around with timing it fired, ooooh soooo loud with no exhaust and at 10.00pm.
It ran fine though Dave said it was a bit lean. It has a really nice lumpy idle too.
So there you go. A few little things to sort out but it's a goer.
Thanks again Dave

Next Update:

During the week Dave fitted my brand new LCB/RC40 exhaust. He is such a perectionist, measuring, fitting and refitting just to make it perfect.

I fitted competeion rear bump stops, only to find out the bump stops that had fitted previously (not by me) were fitted the wrong way around so that they would never work. :)

Yesterday my mentor came over to help out again. He sorted out my shifter problem by stripping down the remote and reasssembling it. Now its great.

Now more problems, its two steps forward and one step back with Slidey.
1.
It developed a massive and consistant mid fire above idle. Dave checked fuel in the carb and then we swapped the electronic ignition. Still had the miss fire. Dave narrowed it down to a short. He disconnected a couple of wires and it ran sweet. I think that I need a auto electrician. :)

2. Horn doesn't work. No power to the horn. (Dave just popped in and fixed it)

4. With my new battery Dad had to make a new battery hold down as it was too high.

5. The clutch doesn't work!!!!
Dave correctly set up the clutch/flywheel assembly so I knew that that area was spot on. Hydrolic? maybe it had a master cylinder that was too small. There wasn't enough push of the arm. Looked like I needed a new master cylinder. Bloody Slidey!!!
This morning I took out the drivers seat to remove the cleavis pin. Picture this, a massive Elephant Seel/Walrus laying on his back on the drivers side floor of a mini. lol
Anyway I discovered that there was no pin! yep no cleavis pin holding the master cylinder to the pedal. Shouldn't be suprised as MANY things were left off the car or not fitted correctly. You guys remember the 'reconditioned' engine problems that the previous owner had with Slidey. ;)
Time is running out. Some late nights. Wednesday I have an over night in Goodoowindi for work so that night is out.
Fingers crossed.......
