did 62 850's have a heater ?
No.
The first Australian Mini to come standard with a heater apart from the Cooper S was the Matic. The second one was the Clubman.

Um... the 997 & 998 Coopers here had heaters too but I guess although sold by BMC Aust, they were un-Australian then...

As for the Matic's heater (optional on Mini K) it would not qualify as a heater OR demister, unless the car was moving.. as there was no fan. :P

The 997/998 Cooper was not Made in Australia, it was assembled in Australia from imported kits. There is a huge difference.

The only reason the Matic got a heater was to improve engine cooling.
The only reason the Clubman got a heater was due to ADRs requiring a demister.

How heavy is your wiring? If their claims are correct, two of those on full heat means 320 watts, at 12 volts that's over 26 amps!  That's loom melting territory!

They are not fitted yet, but the plan is for a seperate 30A circuit and fuse from the solenoid, triggered by a heavy duty relay from the ignition. Most of the wiring on the Moke is custom anyway. Alternator is 85amp, so it should take it.

Cheers,

Hey, Morris... The 997/998 Cooper, though being from a CKD kit, still had a local body and many other components, though... So it's not completely different. My old 63 997 Cooper (of which, very little Cooper was left! But the plate and body numbers worked, along with all the other little details) was definitely an Aussie body - two little drain holes, etc. So it's pretty well 6 of one, half dozen of the other, isn't it? Certainly not a huge difference, unless you're documenting and notating the history of manufacture at BMC. :) In real life, it's still an Aussie body Mini with a heater. :P :) No disrespect intended. :)

Brett - I've actually got one of those little heaters. I bought it at Kmart to use in our Camper Trailer. Cost me $20. I made the mistake of plugging it into a 12A limited adapter - it cut in and out constantly, and didn't do much to heat anything. But connected directly to the deep cycles, it worked really well. :D But, given it also draws 13A, it wasn't going to stay on long. And where we were camped... 13A wasn't going to help much!

Thanks for the feedback. My actual intention for them is not to demist the screen, rather provide a little warmth in front footwells of the Moke on cold days. The top would be up and most of the time only one side would be operating. Im not expecting miracles.

I've plugged one into the Pathfinder's socket and it seems to heat up quite well and be pretty effective. But I guess if they don't do the job, then I haven't wasted too much money. :)

Cheers,
Brett.

Sorry but two drain holes does not make it an Australian body, it just makes it a locally assembled body using imported componants.

I know it sounds like 6 of one, half dozen of the other but you have to look at where the the steel was made and where panels were stamped. Up till 65 BMC Australia didn't make Minis in Australia they just assembled them.

Every Clubby came with 2, should be plenty about from deceased Clubbies.

Not sure if this is relevant, but when my mini was running (now under restoration) I use to wipe a very weak solution of shampoo and water on the inside of the front windscreen. This prevented misting up for at least 7 to 10 days.
As for keeping it nice and cosy, I didnt buy a mini to feel comfortable. :)
