The big problem with bricks is they can crack or shatter without warning and drop the mini onto your chest . Look at how bricks are laid in a wall , they are supported evenly by the mortar and the mortar on top supports the next one evenly so the whole brick supports the next one . Placing them on top of each other dry (no mortar) means they are only touching small sections of the one above and below and alsso only touching a small part of the mini that they are supporting . Even the slightest movement can make one crack which can make the next crack or shatter and so on , it just isn't worth it . Either use stands ($29 from supercheap etc) or large flat blocks of hardwood (I use some that are 12" by 3" by 24" and stack them in a pigsty pattern if I can't use stands for whatever reason , particularly on grass) .

I am the first person to jump up and down if someone uses bricks instead of jackstands. See my other threads.

I just wanted this thread to include some discussion on how dangerous bricks are.

I was trying to be a bit funny..

With hoist positions I use the rear of the front sub frame mounts, where they bolt to the shell.

I have seen many minis damaged by people positioning the hoist pads on the shell itself (front floor pan corners and rear floor pan corners) it simply can notsafely support the weight IMO.

Mmmmm, sorry I wouldn't suggest lifting your mini on the hoist by the rear of the front sub-fram as shown. A more stout and stable position would be on the front subframe, under the where the lower control arms / drive shafts are. Sorry, not trying to be picky are a pain, but that point of the subframe is not that strong. It's also a bit too close to the centre line of the car.
And yes NEVER lift a complete mini by the body shell, unless you don't like it.

It is nice though to have such great facilities to make working on your mini so much nicer :)

Yeah I do agree with that. I only do it where I do because I find it harder getting the hoist arm under the control arm. When I do hoist the mini I position it with the front of the mini close to the center of the hoist so their is more weight of the back of the mini hanging out the back if that makes sense.
