Got it going tonight. After replacing the base plate I still couldn't get any gap so I had to file out the adjustment hole. Filed it out 1-2 ml and now I have set the gap as per the book. Re-installed, no stuttering, running great. (Haven't tested it on the freeway though) :D

Cheers

If your dizzy is that worn it may pay to invest in a dwell meter. Mine didn't cost much and I haven't had a set of feeler gauges near my dizzy for years!

If you set the points gap by the dwell angle it'll take into account that things have worn. For my mini a dwell angle of between 57° - 63° is needed (I usually set it to 60°). I never usually have a set of points stuff up and my car always runs great.

Not sure how to tell if the dizzy dwell meter is worn (is this the red right angle thing that opens the points?), but Ryan brought over a new set of points that he bought, and it looked almost identical. Either way, just filing it out about 1-2 ml gave me the clearance I needed to set the points gap, and it worked a treat. If it wears out I might get a new set, but for now its working.

Cheers for the help guys.

A dwell meter is a separate 'gauge' that I hook up between the -ve side of the coil and earth. Dwell angle is a measure of the duration of time that the primary circuit of the ignition system is closed to energize the primary windings of the coil. It expressed (and measured) in degrees of rotation of the distributor rotor, hence the use of the term "angle".

If there is wear in the dizzy body etc this external 'gauge' will allow you to correctly set the points gap to take into account the general wear in the dizzy bushings etc.

I can post a picture of mine when I get home if you wish. I think it's a worthwhile investment although many do get by without one.

Dwell meter or not, if you have points and worn dizzy shaft bushings, you are throwing HP away.
The dizzy shaft orbits around, points gap changes, you will never get the same timing on all 4 cylinders.
