Head studs 42 ft/lb, Rocker shafts 26ft/lb........what head gasket are you using Tombo :?:

Yeah i know the studs are 42 but the coarser thread of the bolts requires a stronger torque to create the same clamping force, IMO

I have been using the silver tin/graphite type gaskets, but i seem to have problems with them. I'm using a monotorque this time.

The recommended thing is to throw the bolts away and fit studs.
The bolts were only used for a couple of years and are not very reliable. They usually break shortly after changing a head gasket.

I have only had a stud break once, got itself right out of the engine and went missing :?

So no one can tell me the recommended torque???? :(

Personally Tombo I wouldnt use the bolts unless requested..... 42ft/lbs will be just fine and dandy.
I have had a look at the tin head gaskets and personally I think they are a little thin between the bores and considerably thicker than the monotorque.
If your block is flat and your cylinder head is also flat you will have many hours of enjoyable driving...... 'till something else stops working

Alrighty, its my fault that there is al this "banter" about copper head gaskets. There was a thread a while ago, a bunch of people (everyone on here) said they "blow so hell no" and I said I've always used em on my motors with out issue.

So after everyone tried to convience me I was mad, and a few experts got involved and tried to tell me I was seeing things I went and started some research (I know I know,, pretty bad bit of OCD there :) )

Heres what I have found so far;

There are 3 main manufactures of copper head gaskets for A series motors, Payen, Rover and I forget the third but if you really want to know I'll find out and put it up. Now at least one of these guys ""claims"" to have a different type of composite... its my bet that I was just lucky enough to be buying them from one of the manufactures that have a combo that works. ***** BUT***** After reading everyones testimony that they "don't work" I personally am not going to risk it anymore and the motors I do from now on I am going to use BK450's...

Now there are probably a couple of you out there who knew this but BK450 does not always mean ""metro turbo gasket"" the bastards that make these gaskets thought it would be halarious to use the same part number for multiple products. The standard one which has a 4cc compressed volume and the turbo one has a 3.1cc compressed volume.. Maybe some one can explain that, I don't get it. I thought that the turbo gasket might have held more so that it also had so de compressing capabilities as a posed to jacked the comp ratio up?

So there you go... the ""Copper Head Gasket Guy"" doesn't use em any more either

 Personally, use what you like copper, paper, coke cans what ever......If it works for you thats all that matters.......I myself use the metro turbo headgaskets on all 1275+ because I have found they work the best for me and many other engines I have had the pleasure of "adjusting"

Some recent new studs are rubbish, God knows where they come from before they get to UK.
I'd buy an ARP set and do it properly.
Or, rob an unsuspecting 998 Clubby of its studs and flanged washers, they are good material.

The genuine original thick head stud "washers" are getting a bit hard to find 2nd hand,,, i really don`t like those (so called) "competition" thin cone shaped things,,, for a start they are way to large in diam & 2ndly they are just crap thin & you need a few piled ontop of eachother to take up the distance normally needed to make sure you don`t have the nuts bottoming on the end of the thread on the stud,,, shall i keep going?

If using 2nd hand stuff then i like the std issue "Dimpled" 1275 studs with those original thick (small diam) washers,,, but 2nd place would be the tapered top studs,,, but they`re not a patch on ARP or the dimpled ones

TELL ME ABOUT IT!!! I don't know about anyone else on here, but I have found that lately the genuine big end nuts are crapola, the threads on them are regularly of square!! so you can't torque em up properly..

I'm with the doc.... I might be a big enough tight arse to lighten and polish my own rods, but for a lot of thing I use ARP stuff ...

and no,,, i don't have shares in the company or anything so don't get the wrong idea

Yes Matt, I have found the same. I thought they were taking the mickey as it were. IMO just good quality High Tensile Washers (yes, there is such an animal) do the trick just nicely, but be careful what you buy here as many fastener suppliers think all washers are the same.......
