A bit more info just to add to the mix.
Body numbers start at 0001, car numbers start at 501, so car number on the ID plate will be approx 500 more than the body number stamped on the radiator shroud. Or alternatively the body number on the shroud is approx 500 less than the car number, take your pick.
The code M2/06 stamped on the radiator shroud may or may not be inside a circle. My car has the M2/06 stamp close to the radiator shroud edge readable from the engine side. The BODY number is stamped further to the rear of the shroud. I have seen a car about 10 later than mine, my car is late 68 build - car No 4825, with the M2/06 stamped inside a circle at the rear edge of the shroud and facing the bulkhead.
Seems the number stamping may depend on when and who did the stamping.
The CAR number, only the number part not the YKG2S2 part, for a Mk1 should be stamped below the bulkhead ID plate and match that on the plate. This number was stamped after the car was painted. If it hasn't been repainted it will most likely be rusty by now.

Hope this helps
RonR

The factory workshop manual may be an official factory publication but it does not say that the car number is stamped on the firewall.
It says that the ID plate is on the firewall and that during 69 they changed the location of the stamping to the engine radiator cowl but it does not say where it was moved from.

Actually, yes you are correct on that. I do seem to have some recollection of seeing it in some offical publication - owners manual?? or perhaps try the workshop manual and TME?

It must have been published somewhere, after all how did most us of learn where the offical numbers are?

Back when I was re-registering my Traveler after several years in storage I was asked to provide evidence of its weight. They were quite happy to accept information from any published source including a magazine.

Unfortunately i couldn't find one that referenced the Trav so I had to pay for a weighbridge certificate.

Based on my experience, they're not trying to catch you out, just looking for something to base the approval on.

Cheers, Ian

Page 6 of Mini Kingdom Catalogue has a reference as well, to the location of the body numbers, just another piece of literature.

Just to update the end of this sorry saga....

I went back to the mechanic, he rang RTA, RTA said should use rad cowl numbers.

I said no way. I rang RTA myself the next day to clear it up.

Turned out RTA made a mistake looking up my car (must have read info for MK2 not MK1 Cooper S) The Mechanic rang the RTA at 10 to 5 so maybe he rushed looking it up.

He apologized and rang back the mechanic to clear this up.

The mechanic had to rewrite the slip and redo the brake test (has to be same date)

Haven't been to the RTA yet as I'm waiting for my new plates, hopefully I won't have any other hassles.

Thanks to all for your help.
