Can the rack bushes be replaced with the rack in the car?

Theortically, yes, but it is easier (and you'll end up with a better job) if you take the rack out.

That would be a fun job, in situ with the rack inside the bush....
With the rack apart I have a special DrMini tool to drive the bush out, most are tight as. I centre pop the felt bush's steel case in 3 places to deform it inwards, otherwise the tool (which is 1" diameter) can go through the bush casing and leave it behind. It can't be made bigger, the rack tube's bore is only 1".

New bushes are red or blue polyurethane with a hex bore. Easy to fit.

You would have to take the inner rack out but yes, that would be fun, however I think replacing the pinion seal and then shimming it and the yoke up would be way more fun........

Personally, I think I'd rather bash my thumb with a hammer.......

Hum,

This is interesting,

does any one know size of the larger rack?

Also how much does one of these "good" racks go for?

rack diameter is .875"

PM me for pricing to do YOUR rack.

I'm not sure what Mini King charges exchange, ring him and ask.

Well, laying my hands on an Aus rack could be tricky from the UK,

I'm sure if you contact Mini King, John Smidt can send you a reconditioned one. He sends stuff all over the world.

I have changed many rack bushes in the car, its easy

Remove boot, tie rod,end & lock ring, remove small self tapper that holds rack bush sleeve in, wind rack to full RH lock, screw 3 longish self tappers into rack bush between bush & shaft, turn rack to LH lock, rack bush & sleeve come out easy. Replace bush into sleeve & fit onto rackshaft, making sure hole for selftapper lines up with hole in housing, fit new lockring to shaft, turn rack to RH lock, new bush/sleeve gets pulled into housing, refit self tapper, tie rod etc, drink beer. Easy.
