I've noticed a few `stroker 998s' have been rebuilt with a 1098 crank & pistons, by a couple of well known Mini engine rebuilders a few years apart (no names, no pack drill), and both have left the old 998's tin crank pulley on them.

I cant imagine any Mini engine builder worth there salt would use a tin pully, unless they were restoring an original 850 and it had to be there. Most tin pullys will explode at high revs and even just doing the fan belt up too tight can distroy them. I would say these engines were sold as exchange reco long motors and were not supplied with a pully, rather the customer has just re fitted there old pully and not known any different.
Heres a pic of the lovely item in question...(on a original 850)

When I say `tin pulley' I meant that one, or the later cast one- ie. not harmonic balancers.

One of these reco motors was painted blue all over when bought, tin pulley and all.
