G'day people, on the same subject i have been having trouble with my voltage reg in that it is only reading the temp and fuel gauges intermittantly, ie; both gauges only read sometimes , but i don't believe that when they do that they are reading correctly. Today i changed the reg then fired car up and nothing seemed to happen with the gauges then they decided to work and in saying that they ,( for the first time ) appeared to be reading correctly, temp read just under 1/2 and fuel gauge showed 1/2 a tank and when i physically moved the fuel sender to the full position the gauge moved up with it then when i thought that i had solved the problem i put the firewall blanket and air filter box back in, went and checked gauges again as i still had car running the bloody things were not working, could it be a loose wire somewhere or crook earth maybe ? Any ideas as what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated. If i do have to get a new reg where would be the best place to buy a new one from , i have seen them advertised for 90 + dollars which i think is a bit steep.

Fixed the problem.
I hadn't wired it through the regulator.

Thanks for all your help.

I guess it can be a bit of a trap. Most of the Smiths Temp gauges I've come across don't go via the regulator and the workshop manual also shows this on the oz built cars. There is also little info on the gauge or with it to suggest this.

Glad you got on top of it.

<EDIT> I am incorrect in what I have said here. The workshop manual does show all temp gauges fed from the regulator.

Originals are not that hard to find either if thats your ideal. The attaching brackets are 90 degrees out of kilter to the origninals, but the rest is the same.

Thanks GT,

Unfortunately, in this case i should of known better, the gauge came with the correct wiring diagram, which I chose to ignore because 'I know what i'm doing'. I found the diagram and a positive result ensued.
