Popping? Isnt that the craze among the kids these days? That wierd dance move or something.
Maybe they are popping and then dancing wierd... not sure... lol

Your gearbox needs to come off, while its out and apart, do what you can. Baulk rings, linkages, etc... its well worth having a rebuilt box!

Hey thanks for all your help. Havent been on since jan due to uni honours year, but the engine just came out last week. Hopefully if i dont get too stuck in my thesis i can get some pics up. I've forgotten what its like to drive a real car at this point :( but i shall persist untill i can get her out on the ocean road for her first spin back.

But for now its my big understeering boat of a fairlane.

Thanks again to everyone.

The gearbox was new rebuilt so ill diagnose what is truely dead and what is still new and take it from there. Learning some valuable tricks in gasket thickness and thou clearance after torquing up the box thou.

Will report back with further progress.

Gave up on rebuilding the box myself, took it to the local pro (not to say i didnt give it a red hot go, untill I couldnt get the fly wheel to pop).

Just heard from the store owner (not the mechanic) that something like the main shaft is gone as well as throwing some kind of pins out as well. I'm sure my description in no way explains near the detail i was given however the mechanic who is a reliable, patient, and brilliant by any standards, without seeing the car, automatically asked, "how much boost does it have". Apparently he has only ever seen this part go once before years ago and it didnt lose the pins.

This was a new rebuilt box but i have been running boost, and to be honest not going easy on it. Two years is good amount of time to keep a gearbox running with a 1275 A+ running 9-1 compression at 5 - 8 psi daily. Now i cant afford to keep being so mean to it so its going to be the occasionaly spin and gentle drives untill i can spend all my money again.

The rebuilt box will be looked after and treated with lots of respect like the old care deserves.

if your going to be pulling the gearbox apart, which it sounds like your going to have to. Then i would put new springs in your selector hubs. best thing i did when i had the box off my motor last time.

if your selecter is worn, then youll ruin your dog teeth on that selector faster. if its going into gear but popping out, i would look at not only your gear selector mounts but the engine mounts too, stabiliser bar rubbers etc.

one of my early motors used to do this, and it turned out to be the motor rocking back and forth in the engine bay.
