Stick to the good ol' cooper "S" balancers . . . My previous engine had one of these balancers on it for less then 12 months . . . only a road motor and didnt see over 7,000 rpm . . . spent most of its life between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm. The outter started spining on the inner probably about a month after I built the engine, it made a "loose fan belt sound" when a largish electrical load was put on, used to go away for awhile when I tightend the belt . . . anyways it shite itself on the way back from QLD last year and i had bugger all oil pressure after that . . . anyways dont do it, it ain't worth the trouble.

hmmmm .... interesting.....

My GT has a Romac fitted and I've noticed recently a slight "squeek" coming from the fanbelt/HB/Water pump area. It mainly happens when the engine is cold and running rough(ish) or about to stall. I wonder if this is a Romac issue? Is there any way of checking it? Last thing I want is for it to poo poo itself on the freeway somewhere.

What did you do when it happened on the way back from QLD scott? What's the damage potential when they let go?

The damage is lots of bearing material and crankshaft metal through out your engine and gearbox :!: in otherwords an engine rebuild and gearbox re-co.

Im not saying that the "s" ones are not prone to failing but they seem to hang on for many years as yours did Matt, the one I had on a street engine that was used once at Hay and compared to the other engine combos ive had DID NOT cop a flogging . . . they did how ever send me a new one as they have found where they were failing but I will only ever use it on a small bore rebuild that wont see over 7,000 rpm.

so is there any way of checking it to avoid said bearing material and crankshaft metal through out your engine etc?

Drop over Skender if you like. We can give it a look in and give the rest a tune up if you like.

Doc mine didnt have any of those signs, when the balancer/damper (whatever you want to call it) let go it just went "BANG", sounded like I had just blown a tyre clean off the rim at about 75 - 80 mp/h except without the losing control and comment of "oh sh!t what am I going to hit!!"

When i got the balancer/damper off the engine you would swear it didnt have any rubber between the steel hub and the alloy ring/pulley . . . was very clean and gafmo shiny/bling on the bonded surfaces.

 Go for a rebonded "S" balancer/damper Doc knows a place  or at the least find a good 2nd hand one, especially for a road engine but get it balanced with the rest of your engine components :!:
