I brought a car for my daughter from Brisbane about 16 mths ago, ( private sale ) old mate that i brought it off had a QLD Safety Certificate for the car which i thought you had to have in QLD when selling a car because your system is different to NSW , as far as having annual inspections done ( i could be wrong ). I drove the car around in NSW for 3-4 months until it was due for rego then went and transferred the rego into my name. Now i'm not saying that this is the right thing to do but i wasn't queried at the RTA about it so i just paid the money , smiled , said thanks and walked out, job done.
It seems like a bit of a cloudy issue which shouldn't surprise anyone when your dealing with motor registries, also don't quote me on this but isn't it 7 days to transfer rego in NSW.
Colin.

It used to be after 3 months you were supposed to transfer to NSW rego.
This didn't stop lots of people keeping the Qld rego, as it was much cheaper.
My brother in law had Qld rego down here for years.

I know what is required here but as people that think they know put the wrong info in it ends up not being worth posting the truth as it doesn't end up being believed.

Hopefully you will get the truth you deserve from the number I gave you.

Cheers
Steve

Steve - really appreciate the contact number, Ian was a great help and cleared it up for me.

so everyone knows / for future reference if people are searching it seems its a messy area and even QLD Transport arent very clear on it but the jist is as below and what im going to do :-

1) dont bother with a safety cert because as soon as it crosses the border to NSW its worthless and can be chucked in the bin
2) if possible send over the border on the back of a truck with the rego plates and sticker removed just before and get a refund on them saying youve disposed of the vehicle.
3) But if you want to help the buyer in NSW then leave the rego on (so they can move the car around a little and helps with transfering to NSW reg) and get to know them / promise / guarantee not to rack up any fines on the QLD plates. Get them to have it RTA tested (i think) and registered on NSW plates withing 14 days then post back to the old plates to you for rego refund.

Thanks everyone else for their comments / advise.
