BINI, to me, is just another new car, a poor man's BMW. but it has captured the spirit of classic mini. everyone who is baggin it needs to take the time out to check it out. i did, the guy at the BMW shop let me drive it, but it honestly felt like mums ford driving around town. but i couldnt really play with it, there was heaps of traffic about. i would love to be able to play with one!

It seems to me people are getting confused between the different types of ownership. For many of the people (many but not all) on this forum owning a mini is part of a classic car ownership with all the hardships that this implies. Ie we actualy enjoy having to, and being able to do engine work, change our own brake pads \ linings, take the head off and cut, burn and bring ourselves to exhaustion while doing it all. Plus there's the added component of driving the cars with all their pecularities, quircks and driving pleasure. And lets admit it we've all probably driven far more accomplished cars than the very basic and primitive mini but "basic" and "primitive" are again all part of the fun. Its all part of being an automobilist in the classic sense (ie part mechanic, part restorer, part cheap thrills weekend racer). There are similar communities of owners everywhere, driving and restoring their Escorts, Jags, monaros, MGs, healeys and what not.

People who own BMW MINIs shouldnt be bagged or ridiculed (well maybe just a little) its a decent, reliable, comfortable, well built car. Accidentaly it is somewhat similar to the original mini even though a "mini" it aint, as the doc always says a corola is smaller. So for people driving the MINI the classic car ownership with all that in involves is not the main thing, instead they want a reliable comfortable car where theres no need to regularly do staff to it to ensure it drives every morning. The "cute" design is a bonus and for some people it plays to the nostalgy for the car of their youth or the 60's icon.

A good quote if from July 2004 CAR magazine (which accidentaly was originaly an all mini magazine in the 60's):

" (BMW)...includes the new MINI which is just a badge of convenience for a great small car that happens to share some exterior design cues with the old mini. It is really a mini BMW not a BMW Mini. "

For me - I only own the beast so that I could write these long pointless posts on this forum.

Very well put Mike.

Only one point I would like to challenge and that is where you said "Accidentaly it is somewhat similar to the original mini " - I do not believe the design of the MINI was any accident by BMW but was in fact a very clever and intensional design giving BMW a powergful marketing angle.

But who could blame anyone for wanting to own one. Top small car out there in today's market.

Of course it was styled on the old mini, just the the new beetle looks surprising similar to the old...

But BMW did not design the mini, ROVER guys did, albeit under the control of BMW..

BINI drivers never wave to me, but mini drivers nearly always do. I don't think there is any cameraderie there. I don't mind them, but I would rather, as makka says, spend my non-existent $50,000 on something like a wrx or a xr6 turbo or renault clio sport than a small BMW of any description
