Its not as scary as all that, although you do take a deep breath before wading in. A squillion photographs and zip lock bags help. Its pretty rewarding however..and you know exactly what has been replaced in your box and what has not.
A subtle trick is knowing what a worn part looks like however. When you take a gearbox apart you will assume the bearings are worn out and replace them (unless you're doing a bodge job of it), a shaft will show scoring and swarf is a definite warning. But how do you spot a worn out synchro hub, cone or selector fork? Some parts need a skilled eye thrown over them as they won't give up their secrets as easily as a scored layshaft...
