Everybody hears great stories of great rare cars, why is so hard for some to believe that they actually exist?

That's because some of us have heard dozens, even hundreds of these stories over the years. I've even followed some of them up, to find the car was not as described at all. Others have in fact turned out to be true.

I'm not saying such a thing categorically does not exist, but I'm saying I remain skeptical, that's all.

Travellers and Countryman with cooper s specs would have had all the original factory numbers for 850 engine etc etc , there were apparently 6 that were converted by the Cooper Car Co
Quote Jan 67
Basic price of Mini Traveller, with wooden battens 465 pounds
Purchase tax 108 17 11 pounds
Conversion to 1275 S specs 500 pounds
and then ther were the extras !
Apparently either Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood I can't remember ordered 2.

I seem to remember a similar thing that had been misquoted repeatedly in the photo's that were about showing it and had all manner of claims made about it , a mini on tank tracks ...

I found the designer and builder and the story of it until it vanished in the late 60's (I'm still searching for it now ...) . Maybe someone needs to do the same for the clubman GT Van . Personally I don't doubt a Clubman van left the factory with 1275 and discs etc , but I'd love to see the proof (photo of ID plate etc) that it was all as GT M said and not basically an upspec'd van . Are you still in contact with the guy who owned it GT M and if so does he remember anything about who bought it (even something as vague as where he lived when he sold it or a first or last name of the buyer ) ?

This may sound a bit ignorant, but isnt that what all cars are? Varients of the one that came before it?
isnt a cooper is just a mini with (a lot of) extras on it with a guys name attached to it?
A holden HR X2 is just a HR with extras on it, but extremely rare and sought after.
So I answer, is it just a van with a lot of extras? Or just that little bit more than that?
Just my thoughts.

I think you may have missed the point.

No, I think you missed his point. Even a GTHO phase three is just a tricked up XY falcon. It just has a compliance plate that makes it worth close to a million dollars

KB, there's a big difference between a car that optioned up to all buggery from the factory (or even at the dealership), and a factory sanctioned and branded special edition.

I saw a Kia Rio sedan a few years ago, with a factory fitted body kit, twin exhausts, covered in rice and hideousness. They were never offered for sale like that..........the owner requested every modification individually and the dealer applied them (no, I don't know why either). Now, if Kia had, as part of a marketing ploy or whatever, released those options as part of a package or as a "sport" model or something, that'd be different.

I think Morris is saying that if you order a Corolla with aircon and a towbar, it's still just a corolla.

Ohh yeah forgot that the engine number is not on the compliance plate (sorry forgot that - dont know how i did but i did)

Brownclubman when he bought his GT gearknob it was from the GT van, he actually bought it off the guy who owned it and from memory he said he was a manager there or something, but i dont think it is around anymore.

It is a very strange story and one that I am very interested in seeing this epic continue. I have seen a lot of things claimed as factory when they were clearly not factory but this one seems it may be different.

Now this GT Van has a GT number but that in itself is almost a mistake as the "2S" in the number refers to a 2 door sedan. A Van should have a "V" in the prefix. But then there is no special prefix to cover a very special van.

I would have loved to have seen it in the flesh.

That programm brings back memories. I,d sold my 998 Cooper a few weeks before to a friend (Barrry Collins-who owns again, the Leffler Mini cooper) & it won it,s class with Barry handing me the trophy which I still have. When sold ,it,s rego number was AAK17B
It is or was, red/white roof & was last at central coast?WANT IT BACK.
