I had a Helicoil fitted (installed by very good mechanic) to my sump but over the years it got tighter and tighter so I had a look why this was only to find that the Heli had broken into 3-4 bits and the sump plug was only holding on by about one thread of Helicoil wich was loose in what was left of the thread (not much).

I had a friend make up another plug but the next tread size up and I retapped the sump,
all good but it is very hard to get the tap (for threading the new thread) square.
I think you would have the same problem with Helicoil or similar without removing motor

I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO ME!!

They don't tend to last as long.

I went and got a gas thread bolt with a tapper on the bolt, i think it was a slightly bit bigger than the original and It tapped its on thread. Has worked charms.. as for a tempory fix until I got time to fixing the sump plug i used this   (many would remember this :) ) Some good ideas I've had. Worked perfectly, no leaks at all, and it was fine for the 600km it traveled.. :)

good idea aye?? :P

You can buy something slightly less agricultural looking from Minispares

Did you have to drink the contents of the bottle to get the cork? Of course it's not complete without the little metal cap from the top of the cork, and the twisted retaining wire? I hope you kept the theme and drained the oil into a champagne glass? :)

Actually, as I typed that my mind went back to a modification used in the days I rallied Minis. A small hole through the head of the sump plug and the same through a fin of the gearbox with a retaining wire holding the two together. In fact I think it was (still is?) a requirement for circuit racing so as to avoid an engine full of oil being dumped on the track should the sump plug come loose.

One of the things on my Cooper S that points to it being a race car is the hole in the sump plug.

I have a Mini box here fitted with what looks like a `hand whittled hardwood' sump plug.
Whoever owned it before smashed the side out of the sump plug boss on a rock or something.
It was in a paddock basher we acquired years ago. Looks crap but didn't leak... but the box is now an engine stand.

I would've thought the roll cage, full harness seat belt and numbers on both doors would be a more obvious clue

Roll cage was still optional until Bathurst 69 and much later at other tracks.
The clues for a Series Production car (like raced at Bathurst up till 68)
Lock wired sump plug.
Fire extinguisher.
Extra bonnet catch. (some years you could get away with an octopus strap but they got more serious as the years went on)
Exterior mirror.
Extra gauges. (optional)
Roll bar. (optional in 68)
Otherwise the cars were totally stock. You were not even allowed to change the colour of the car*.

(*big clue about the colour of the 66 winner)

So Michael, to hijack this thread for a moment, tell us about the history of your race car? Have you tracked it back to actual races it competed in? Any pictures from those days?
