I found that once I filed away the cast web on the pump it was really easy to swing the spanner. No more troubles after that. I can get the pump off in a few minutes these days.

Hmmm, i might have to do a bit of modding to my new one before i put it on... For future benefit. Thanks :D

If you are fitting a different pump be aware that you may need to change the spacer and possibly need longer bolts.

well i have the spacer, but i didn't even think about the bolts not being long enough.
I'll have to wait and see if they are ok. :)

The Goss pump uses as thin spacer. (about 6mm?)
The SU/British types use a thick spacer (about 15mm?)

Sounds about right. Minisport in South Aus sell a 12mm spacer which seems to equate with the ones I usually use with the mech SU pump.

the 1100S has the goss mech pump and when I whipped it off recently I remember thinking it had a "thin" spacer, so that must be the 6mm one.

cheers

Jacob

I am only guessing the spacer thickness from memory.

I prefer the Goss pump because it is what most of the Australian cars came with and because it is fixable.

Our Mini K is still running its original 1970 mechanical pump, it has never been changed, not a bad effort 40 years use. It has extractors fitted can't recall what brand though. We have had the car in the family from new.

Having said the above I hope I have not now jinxed it.

ok, i managed to get the thing off, it seems as it is the "Goss" type..
here's the old one next to the new one

But i am a little worried about the length of my bolts.
there is only three groves visible on the bolt when you sit it in the new pump i guess once the spring washer is compressed it might be about 1 to 1 and a half more. Is that enough? or should i ger longer bolts??

Yes, you will need longer bolts. Maybe 3/4 inch longer. However these are available from the bolt rack at Supercheap, bursons, repco (and perhaps Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc.) If you don't have any in your spares.

Just a question, what was wrong with the old pump?

If you undo the screw in the middle of the lid there is a strainer that is supposed to be cleaned regularly. I bet it has never been cleaned! :D

Nooooooooooooooo. If you do that the pump arm will break off and fall into the gearbox..

when i bought it the owner told me the pump was broken, i didn't ask why. I just looked up replacement price and it seemed pretty cheap, so i just got one. now that i have it off i can tell you that when you pump the arm, it does not seem to be making any pressure on either inlet or outlet.
i have done as you sugested and taken some pics.... see if you can diagnose the problem. :)

Nothing too serious looking here. just a bit of crap in the bottom

However after pulling the next bit off
the bottom is full of greasy crap.

thats the stuff on the paper

Could the spacer be the problem???
It has peices broken in the corners and has several noticable cracks

Only a month or two ago I had a rebuild kit put through my Goss pump. I can find the part number for you if you like? That way you can keep your fuel lines away from your extractors.

The buggered spacer would have not helped things but shouldn't have caused it to stop pumping.

Show us some pics of the diaphragm and the little flap valves. If the diaphragm has any cracks/holes or the valves are badly worn/plugged with crud then they wont pump.
