I guess a sequential with an electroniclaly controlled actuator to shift the drum?

A mechanical linkage is another possibility though. Be easier if you need to slide the stick to get into reverse.

Very impressive David. Notice you are using a 3 synchro case which is narrower internally than a 4 synchro. Is that because of the 25mm machined off the 1st motion end, as there is more meat left after the machining?

I am using a 3 syncro box as every man and his dog has some stashed somewhere. Even Matt's dog has a few in the back of his kennel.

The bike shafts are still same length ,just ground the splines to suit the mini gears. The bearings are all standard metric taper roller and cheap to buy.

This box will be set up with gear shift and I might go paddle shift later. The only problem with paddle shift on a steering wheel that is more than 1/2 turn lock to lock is keeping your fingers on the paddles, but a short shift gear stick is going to be quicker.

I am looking at using a std remote shift assembly modified to suit shift. I should have the new end plate finished tomorrow and show how it all fits, then fit it up with the bearings and the ratched shift assembly. So far I have worked out the gear stick movement to change the gears and a std length stick will only move about 30mm at the top. The gate arrangement for reverse will be incorperated[still in the nutting out stage] so that it will only select when the main gears are in neutral between 1st and 2nd.
The 6th gear in this gear set is only suitable for a high revving engine but the VFR set is better for road.

As for a "A" series breaking the gear you would need more than 250HP at the wheels, these honda gear boxes are very strong and the only problem they have ever had is with the single row bearings that they use

Would you run electric or pneumatic paddle shifts?
If you could attach the paddles to the boss of the wheel they'd move with the wheel.

Or go wrc style and a big disc behind, with the right side for shifting up and the left side for shifting down.

I wish i hadnt started a starlet conversion now. One of matts engines with one of your gearboxes would be a bundle of fun.

Once this is all finished could the details be put into a "how to" please? If this is alright with David.

can I do the required modifications to the gearbox casing with nothing more than a Dremel?

Sure you can, you can do it without a ruler if your laser eye is finely calibrated to 1 thou, and youve got a steady enough hand to do it precisely.

From memory doesnt it require a new bearing housing welded in? Or am i confused from the thread with making a straight 4 into a v8?

Are these going to be made for people to buy, or is it a one-off?

hee hee,,, David, i heard it bolts straight in so can you modify it a bit & make it a 7 or 8 speed, plus reverse? & how much extra would that cost & can i get it by next week?

Oh & how much extra to anodise the cases Matt-black for me ?

Yeah, that's what i read... but then the discussion seemed to change as if people were of the impression that there would be more. I was just wondering if i'd missed something.
