It does not need to be real cold. It can do it on warm days in the right conditions. (constant throttle, damp air)

carb icing always makes me laugh - it's like cruise control... driving along the freeway on a cold morning, back off and it keeps going - naughty mini!

did it do it again when you drove home, or back to normal?

it's good fun in a XC ford 351[very,very worked over] with two 4 barrel carbs driving over lake leake in the middle of winter in the snow and they decide to ice up solid
thank god for the 2.72 detroit locker, one wheel in the dirt and just knock over the guide posts for steering.

Perhaps now is a good time to start learning how to maintain old cars? Or just buy a Hyundai Getz?

Or park it in a bubble in a garage and only take it out once every 6 months. ;)

Getz out of here Hanra!
No, I understand my lack of knowledge may annoy you guys, however I'm extremely keen to learn. I'm saving hard to buy a car so I can retire the mini to the garage and learn all I can at my own pace...

Jee, I must be lucky, I drove to Campbelltown this morning down the M7 and the Hume, probably about 30 odd kays each way with steady speed / throttle and I didn't get any icing of the carby or a sticking throttle.

The principle that a carburettor works on is that it uses a venturi to lower the pressure of the airstream compared to atmospheric, so that atmospheric pressure can push the fuel out of the float bowl, through the jet into said airstream.

Lowering the pressure of humid air that quite happily holds the moisture as vapour easily allows it to condense. Add the fact that you have fuel evaporating into the airstream (takes energy), lowering the temperature of the airstream.

Then you can see that it does not have to be freezing atmospheric conditions to have carburettor icing. Only the right combination of air temp, fuel temp, moisture content and throttle opening.

Also with the right setup, you can happily drive a carby car in snowy conditions without any icing problems.

cheers
michael

Yeap, no argument here.

I have many times had my carbie ice up resulting in a sticky throttle. Conditions yesterday in the general vacinity of Camden where no where near the conditions to result in carby ice.

So if it wasn't carby ice and it hasn't happened since it's most likely to be?

Something sticky with your accelerator cable and throttle linkages. Chaeck around the acc. pedal to see nothing is fouling.
Have a play with the movement of the accelerator cable and lingages and try to gauge a feel for where it might be stiff or sticking. Check for rubbing or a spring which is too soft to return the linkages when you let go of the pedal.
make sure the cable can pass cleanly through the firewall at the back of the accelerator pedal without getting bound up on anything.

Accelerator cables are inexpensive to replace if need be.
