I have filled the car up just for shits and giggles so I could see the fuel nearing the top of the tank and some what near overflow. Wanted to see how much the tank could really take from empty to full. When I got in the car that time it read FULL.

This time I filled it up the same .. cept didn't push it as much .. but still full enough that I could see it. And the guage shows half :S

My trick is a 5l plastic jerry can in the boot. Kept far away from the battery, just incase the issue comes back.

Well that sort of sound like mine. I would carry a torch with you while you use this tank and compare the amount in the tank to what the guage reads.

Mine tends to read 1/2 when its 3/4's and then takes ages to move past 1/2. then drops pretty quick when getting empty.

We had a Toyota Yaris that did this. Would take forever to go from F to 1/2 then drop to empty in no time.

As mentioned if you notice it goes up and down while you drive then the instrument voltage regulator needs replacing. Mine would read low as I drove and higher when I sat at the lights.

Or if you don't have a torch just use anything that creates a light source, such as a cigarette lighter.

Disclaimer: In the interests of political correctness I advise all readers that the above commentary is meant as a joke and in no way should a cigarette lighter be used for this task. A lighted match will illuminate the tank contents satifactorily but whatever you do don't use a cigarette lighter.

Disclaimer: That last bit was also meant as a joke, but if you decide to do it anyway please consider your fellow Ausmini members and get someone to take some before and after photos and post them in this thread, which will no doubt become a How To sticky.

Disclaimer: That last bit was also meant as a joke, but ......

I've had the same problem, turned out to be the voltage stabiliser, ( is your temp gauge
reading low ? ) . What i tried ,was to get a bit of wire strong enough to put inside the tank filler and lift the sender unit up slowly and check to see if the gauge moves to the full position, ( make sure the key is in the on position ). My fuel gauge would only read 1/2 full and my temp gauge would only read 1/4 , i put a second hand stabiliser in it and it's been fine ever since.

Well now that you mention it.

When I bought the car the guy was like .. OK so this button does this .. this does that. This is the oil pressure guage which he never worked out what did.. but its kinda obvious right??

Any ways then he goes on to mention the temp guage.. and said .. if its ever up it means I've driven the car to much.. Well the temp guage just wiggles at 0 .. all the time. Like .. It never shows that the car is even warmed up. I was under the impression that thats a good thing.. but now I'm having second thoughts.

its not ideal no. If you still haven't fixed it before we meet in November, I can take the sender out and diagnose it for you  Quite easy to be honset. I also have a spare gauge here, that if u find that's what it is, you can have it for gratis. 8)

Hope u get it sorted

Your a gem. I shall look it over tomorrow when there is daylight. I should be able to figure it out.. IF not I will just take a load of photos of what I find and maybe someone here can diagnose the issue.

:D

That was what my temp gauge was like before I replaced the voltage stabilizer. My car would mostly show between cold and normal (in summer!!) and if I was stuck in traffic it would show normal.

Installed one of wombats Electronic stabilizers, it now shows spot on normal. If driving hard up hills or stuck in traffic it reads between normal and hot.

You can see your stabilizer if you look from the engine compartment at the back of the speedo there is a small box with some wires connected. If you buy a new stabilizer you can just leave the old box there and just attach the wires into the new stabilizer, it's just a tiny little circuit board.

Even if the problem is something else replacing the voltage stabiliser is still worthwhile, but it sounds like that could be the problem.

The fuel gauge reading in my car used to vary inversely with speed. The faster you went the lower it would read. Then you stopped at the lights and watched it come back up!
But you could put the car on stands and run the speed up, no change in reading.

Body vibes were upsetting the poor old `50s technology voltage stabilizer. I binned it and fitted a Wombat Special, no more problems.
