I'll say it again though, anyone pulling that boss out - make sure it's spotless first, because any dirt or grit has a straight shot into the gearbox!

it does need a gasket when you put it back, you can make one, but a bit of sealant (permatex/loctite #2) will do. It doesn't see oil pressure down there so it's not a big deal

edit: one other thing, after you take the bolt out, the easiest way to remove the boss is to twist it to break the gasket seal, then it'll pull out easily. Don't try to move it sideways, or bash the crap out of it - you just need to break the seal

How many different lengths of speedo cable are there? One for clubby and one for roundy????

I have actually noticed of late that they are all getting longer. Even a clubbie on in a clubbie is about 6" too long.

I'll be getting some made - the right length!

ok i have tried to pull out the boss on mine but it won't come..
the seal is broken so it wiggles, but it won't slide out. is seems like the cable end bit is siezed in there. is that posible, or would it be something else?? What can i do to get it out???

perseverence I'm afraid :)

after the boss comes out, there is an insert inside the gearbox that goes around the actual drive gear. It's possible that the insert has siezed, but you should still be able to get the boss out.

if you can turn it 90 degrees so that the pointy end is poking out past the geabox you can carefully insert something to help you carefully lever it up. A razor blade might help

here's a picture of what the bits look like, just ignore the wires and that white plastic ring. The yellow gear and the shaft are one piece, the shaft goes through the insert, and the boss locks into the insert to stop it from turning

I had to buy a small pair of vicegrips and rip quite a bit of skin to get my speedo drive out!

With mine, once I had the new cable in, I lifted the shaft up and then lowered it down until it stopped, and then rotated it slightly until it fell into the drive. It is the only way to be sure that it is attached correctly. Once it is in you wont turn it by hand so that is the tell.

Once the cable was through the fire wall, I did it again just before I connected the speedo. Then when I did the speedo I essentially did the same thing on the back of the speedo to make sure the drive was attached.

Ok i was bored this afternoon and got back to trying to fix this old problem. It is a little easier to see now the engine is out.
I have put a fair bit of leaverage force on the thing to get it out, but it just seems to be stretching the cable, not moving the rest at all.
The end of the cable is welll and truely siezed into the end of the boss, and the boss dosn't seem to be moving either.
I have sprayed some penetrating oil down in there to soak, so i'll see if that does anything.
