Have a look for the threads by SPROCKET, he has got 100bhp out of a SPI still with the standard computer.
Cheers Pete

I've driven a very spritely 1.3i.
It had compression raised to about 11:1, a mild camshaft and 3.6:1 diff, and of course a nice flowing exhaust system.
The standard computer managed OK ... once you go too wild with the camshaft, that's when things start to get messy.

Pretty much impossible to find anyone up here who would touch an SU....!

Um.. so who services the Mokes then??
SU tuning might be a bit of a black art, but it ain't rocket science! :P

Sprocket did not use the standard ecu, at least not from a Mini. he used one from a Rover K series engine with 90HP. and his engine was 1380ccm IIRC.
a good 1380ccm can make 90HP + with the Mini factory ecu, but it will run much better with maps, fuel and ignition, made to give the engine what it needs. sadly you can not buy a chip for Rover MEMS.

They cracked the coding so to speak and you can now buy programmable aftermarket ECUs that plug right in, but I don't believe you can 'chip' it.

I recently bought my red mini van off of Hamish. (some of u will know what Van it is) It runs an 1996 spi engine. Hamish, the legend he is parted some of his wealth of knowledge to me. go on the uk mini website and there is a whole section on the spi engines. You only have about 2 options when it comes to cams. Also, do you have a factory diagnostic tool? you'll need it to tune it. I have one. It came with the car. Do the research on the uk websights, don't go overboard and enjoy the reliability and fuel economy. No tuning carbs every weekend. In the short time i've owned the van i've learnt heaps about the spi. It's not that scary after you research it.

No, you just outright buy it.
Designed for the UK m,arket though so I'm not sure if it can handle AC.

seriously doubt it... but without the diagnostic tool and specific knowledge, a dyno can't do anything for it

all of the options listed above will exceed your budget by an astonishing amount - if you need to have the work done by someone else, even a simple cam change would stretch that budget

Now I'm looking into all this. That can only mean one thing: $$$

Anyone able to give an opinion on what they reckon of say a minisport performance head, 1.5 rockers and a filter would do for me on an otherwise stock SPI engine?
:D

last week I put 1.5 rockers on the SPi deluxe I mentioned - didn't make a scrap of difference. It also has extractors and a K&N filter. The motor is from a ~95 SPi frontcut that came from Japan, completely stock with a shade under 17,000km on it, so it's not worn out (yes, seventeen thousand, barely run in). Still a lot slower than the well-built 1100 it was competing against on Sunday.

Next time I see the guy who owns the deluxe I'm gonna talk him into dynoing it with the injection, then pulling it off and dynoing it again with an 1 3/4" SU.

Cheapest way to make an SPi mini go faster is to ditch the injection - anything else means taking the motor apart which will add up to time and money
