Excellent :!: :!: My dad used to swear by benzine I think BP was the last to get rid of it, reckoned it was the only stuff that would run in his 970 with flat top pistons, always thought that car usedto fly

Methyl Benzene = Toluene Don't know how they got away with calling it Toluol as in organic chemistry naming standards OL indicates an alcohol group -OOH is present and Toluene ain't no alcohol

$12 for a cam grind, GR charges $140 or so

I bought a new 45DCOE for $390 including delivery.

About 3 months ago. It's not that much!

Come to think of it that $12 was for a Wade 176o which was one of their more complicated grinds, so a basic 240 or such may have been cheaper again.

But hey it's your money, go ahead and spend $300 more for the exact same item

wut?

The one Matt pointed out is sold with manifold and air filter.

The one you linked to is jetted for a fiat, and is just the carb by itself.

Given the fact that the first is actually already in Australia and you're buying from an Aussie distributor, I don't think it's unreasonable.

Pretty sure we used to get M-B direct from the pump at the BP in Miranda, I bought a Cooper S off my neighbours friend for $700 in the mid 70's he had won it in a card game!! and my 68 van with 30,000miles and a new respray cost $999 from Terry Baker ? Chrysler in Parraweena Rd Miranda.

I am still getting Methyl Benzine from the pump now. Unleaded 91 has a lot of Toluene in it.
You can smell the paint thinners in it when you start the car.

Hmmm what's cheaper to buy then, 91 or bulk paint thinners... :P

I'm sure that you would remember not too many years ago, there was a fairly large bust for some who were doing just that (with the thinners) and it was Customs who did the bust.

The basis for the bust was inappropriate exise rate paid on the thinners since it was being used as fuel.

But hey, in smaller quanities, I doubt they would bother to follow up.

Toluene is the major component of "petrol". The percentage limits are regulated by law - too much and your fuel lines swell and fall off; too little and they shrink and split. Raising the percentage of toluene will increase octane rating - but be careful.

People may remember a spate of engine fires in NZ a few years ago - basically one shipload of high toluene fuel from Singapore.

Unlike benzene which is highly carcinogenic, toluene is relatively benign... as long as your not pregnant. The Canadian hazardous material website notes that the major consequence of "misusing" toluene is "atrophied testicles" The mind boggles.

Cheers, Ian
