Thanks winabbey. I've never heard of them, how rare are they?

They come up on eBay and elsewhere from time to time. If you are after copies you could also try Wanted on this forum.

I think they're only on the CKD cars, but obviously I don't know for sure. My 1962 850 had them, but I'm fairly sure that the '63 shell I had briefly had regular holes. There are two different styles of rubber mats too, although the difference are subtle, and I think that might be a CKD versus home grown thing too.

FWIW, I think this is a great idea to track down whether these things really were common to all cars, or just a CKD thing or finished somewhere else entirely.

another thing I remembered is the roof lining. The 59-60 cars had 3 seams in the rear section then it was changed to 2. I am not too sure of the change over date but from what I was told is was around early 61.

I believe there was also a change in the floor starter button switches. The early ones had a button that screwed on to the shaft and were open around it, then they fitted the switch with a rubber cover/button.
The base of they early ones had a thin bakalite disc fitted for insulation then the later ones had a stepped connection bolt to keep the leads away from the body of the switch.
I have CKD car with the early type and another with later type, but may have been a replacement one at some stage

Don't know if this helps but my 61 has moulded vinyl kick panels on the edge of the door pocket and bakelite steering column covers.

Thanks Ian. Yes, those are certainly another two. I'll try and add them tomorrow. I had forgotten about the kick panels. I've got a photo of the steering column from a Mini at Alice Springs, but the vinyl kick panels were missing (only the surround). I'd appreciate a photo of the kick panels if anyone has one :)

EDIT: Ian, would you mind sharing the body number of your 850, or just a rounded figure. I'm not sure what my '61 850 would have originally had (no. 5173)

I'm sure yours would have had vinyl, mines # 6003 and Sports thinks it would have been around Nov 61.

Thanks very much for the photos, 850man. Please excuse my ignorance, but what are the last two photos for, especially the last one. :D
The steel rocker cover cap? The washer bottle bracket? (is the wire type early?) Radiator?
Did the real early Minis have black switch panels?

The one I saw at Alice Springs had a white grille (like 621 AOK) Were they standard on early 850s or has it been painted?

And thanks Ian for clearing the kick panels thing up. I'm not restoring the Mini yet (it may be beyond it), but I don't know where I'm ment to find those kick panels  oh well  Welcome to the forum by the way, great place to be. Have you got any photos to share of your 850? :)

And another question, in the Mini Experience, Issue 10, the Sports 850 (pp. 46-47) has front seats with legs, and was apparently built late '62. None of my 850s have those seats, and they are all earlier than that one. Did BMC just whack whatever was around on them? Is my '5173' 850 supposed to have them?

Thanks,
Evan

The washer bottle bracket? (is the wire type early?) Radiator? Yes, all 3 items denote a early 850 along with the carburettor, horn position etc. the green car is no. 2851, it also has a painted grill.Did the real early Minis have black switch panels? Very early 61 cars had the speedo surround and the switch panel made of "egg carton" type material, painted with a black crackle type finish. The one I saw at Alice Springs had a white grille (like 621 AOK) Were they standard on early 850s or has it been painted? Yes, most early 61 cars here in Aus had a white painted grill.

Does it have the bolt on early seat brackets or are they spot welded on, I belive only early 61 cars had the different seats, it may have the bolt on brackets & early seats fitted or it very well may be a 61 car. Thanks,
Evan

The right hand window in the picture is Elmore's which he is a 61-850. car number 2874. It has a different mounting bracket to the glass which makes the frame a little different as well.

The Left hand window in the picture is from (Neval-8238) late 61-62. Which appears to be current.

We have a few more questions and bites to come.

I'm very sorry that I haven't updated this for a whole month. A slow internet connection, holiday, and me being lazy has meant I haven't touched it :(

Thanks very much Flapper for your info/photo. I'll add it to the list now. Is Elmore and Neval-8238 the Minis' names or owner? Are they both yours? Sorry  just making sure that I'll be writing the right thing.

And thank you very much for answering my questions 850man :D

What a peoples' thoughts on using the spare post on page 1 for all 850 features, 61-64? And perhaps trim types/colours as suggested previously?
