Well I've scored a potentiometer from jb007 (Thanks a million Jim). I'm unsure at this time if I should use it or not however pending a few questions.
So if the switch is under the bonnet, am I to assume that the driver chooses to operate the heater at the beginning of the trip and leaves it on? The heater flap modulates the flow? Am I supposing that some markets/models had the potentiometer fitted, and others just had the switch?

As far as I know none of the 997 Coopers used a rheostat to control the heater speed. The heater tap is the top hat type shown in the pics although I have seen the brass tap type in some very early photos.

With the 997 Cooper with the blower in the engine bay it is switched with the switch directly below the ignition switch. Check for the 2 mounting holes in the lower dash panel at this point.

The switch panel has the air control cable at the LH end and the heater tap cable at the RH end of the switch panel. The choke cable is mounted next to the steering column (see pic) and the windscreen washer pump is mounted on the LH side of the dash.

I have the original loom and there is no provision for the rheostat. The heater fan is simply switched and a separate loom runs from the switch directly to the fan motor.

The pics are from an early English 997 Cooper. Sounds like your may be even earlier Gold-brocade. I know the very early Smiths heaters sold as a kit for the 850's used a square box heater with the fan built in. Any chances of some photos of your English set up?

Ah now I get it, I missed the switch position..

Thanks again for the help Wild willy. Apart from the air control flap, I think I might have enough to fit this out properly. But were you telling me there may be another source for a air control flap from a triumph of some sort?

Mick The flap I used was from an Austin Healey. Had to do some metal fabrication to get it right as the flap didnt have the correct angle. Still need to find the right mesh for the front.

A place in UK makes repro flaps for AH 100/4 which look to be the same. Do you have the cable to control Air and the heater tap?

No I don't have the early control cables, I have a couple of the later Mk1 control cables for the heater tap and choke, and as you have seen the super early choke knob.

What's the name of the place supplying the air control flaps may I ask?

Thanks for the photos snail!

Mick check out the 100-4 bits here. The air flapper looks to be angled correctly as well. I'm also wondering if the air control cable might be correct for the Cooper as well. My guess is that BMC may have pulled something off the shelf for these early Coopers.

Might ask them if they can send a pic?

Imagine opening up an Ikea box to find this as an instruction set!
