My, how fashions change. One of the first things I did to the van way back when was remove the floor mounted push button starter and put in proper 'modern' day dash key starter.

Then a few years later a column mounted key start/steering lock which was considered to be the ultimate in modern motoring design.

Next thing we know magic wand type gear stick levers will be making a reappearance on the latest megabuck Audis and Hondas.
